Walked 12+ Kms (7.5+ miles) on Sunday, covering the entire trail in my neighborhood "park". My wife and I routinely do a half of this walk and had been thinking of walking the entire trial for nearly 6 months and the time was just right. (We have biked the entire trail a few times before but had just not walked it.)Also, we repeated the same walk again yesterday but *while fasting*.Both walks felt like "achievement unlocked". ๐ #walk #health #fasting

Comparing stats from the two 12km walks: not fasting versus fasting.Overall, I performed better in the walk when I was fasting, and I could/should have pushed myself a little harder on that walk.(I'm not saying that fasting is what caused me to perform better.)#walk #health #fasting

A short but rewarding hike (6.5+ Kms, 4.1+ miles) yesterday in the hills. Plenty of wildflowers everywhere (just starting to bloom) but had to traverse 2+ miles before spotting the first blue bonnet.

Hiked about 8.5kms (5.3mi) in the prairies and the forest by the lake. Had hoped to see some wildflowers and boy did we see some, thanks to taking the wrong trail initially onto a trail through fields we didn't even know existed. The 2.5kms (1.5mi) detour was absolutely worth. Here is just some of the wildflower variety (more in the next post):

It's interesting how different regions of the forest/field/prairie are dominated by different kinds of wildflowers forming patches of different colors, and some "patches" can go on for a mile or so. ๐ฎHere's part of a "patch" of yellow flowers seen on the last hike โ๏ธ.

Even routine daily walks in the park can be exciting this time of year. The excitement a couple of days ago was due to a lovely golden-headed weevil and a charming grass snake.

The 6.8km(4.3mi) walk couple of days ago, this time by the river, gave the opportunity to see more wildflowers and animals.I love all kinds of flowers but the one in the second picture is fascinating because one half of each flower has traditional petals and the other half as things that look like eye lashes. Each flower is really small, making the lashes very small.

Wildflowers individually are nice (as shown โ๏ธ) but large swaths of the same kind of flower are quite impressive, but unfortunately also hard to photograph (for me). Here is a patch of red flowers from the previous post and a swath of blue bonnets.

Walking along the river means seeing wild animals, the usual suspects: ducks, egrets, herons, turtles, and so on. But the last walk โ๏ธ offered this bonus sighting.

Couple of weeks ago, camped overnight at a state park and hiked ~16kms (10mi). My first time camping outdoors and it was a great experience. I look forward to more of it.Lots of wildflowers (typical of the season) but the sight of the lush green forest canopy was a highlight, as was the unbelievably well-designed bike/hike trail. That combo trail is so good I wished I was riding instead of hiking. I did imagine how much fun it must be to make those turns and jumps, and panting going uphill. ๐

Lots of wildflowers means lots of butterflies and such, but it was exciting to spot one of the biggest butterflies I have ever seen in the wild, almost the size of a hummingbird. (I have seen really large ones in butterfly gardens.)While there were thousands of certain kinds of butterflies, there was just one butterfly of this kind. It's almost as if it got there by accident, or was left behind somehow in migration.

A still of the large butterfly. Was hard to capture because the fly never really stopped fluttering and flying. Sadly, this picture does not do a good job of showing the butterfly's size. (I'm just not a good enough photographer.)FYI this picture is digitally zoomed in. (For conservation sake, I did not wade into the patch of wildflowers, but used 3x optical zoom.)

I haven't had long recreational walks for about six weeks now due to travel, family situation, and high temperatures. So, it was good to complete a 6.7km walk (4.2 miles). Would have been nice to walk at least 10kms but this is a good restart and hopefully it gets better from here.BTW though the distance was on the shorter side, the pace was better than my typical pace: about 30secs faster/km.#walking #walks #health

Happy to have had the time, weather, and commitment to complete a 10.2km (6.3mi) morning walk yesterday: longer distance, faster pace, and better heart-rate pattern than the previous walk.Left about 2.5kms (1.5mi) on the table because I didn't want to make my wife wait any longer than she already had. I feel good about today's early-morning forest hike followed by a dip in the lake. ๐ฅพ โThe hike was rather short at just 4.5 kms (2.7mi) but that's all the situation permitted, but happy to have gotten a hike at all given the unending summer and travel.BTW this was my first hike since April 19th ๐ฏ (have walked ~250 kms since, but not hiked).#hike #hiking #health #forest #nature #statePark

10.6km (6.6mi) hike a couple of days ago, this time in the forest by the lake near me. Lots of birds, animals, flowers, and fruits. Just a day or two of brief rain showers seems to have helped nature recover from weeks of scorching heat.Lots of nice pictures. I particularly love the playful "ponytail" look on the prickly pears. I also love the fruits on the prickly pear. And the intensity of colors on the purple pineapples is just awesome.#hike #hiking #health #forest #nature #photography

The 12km (7.5mi) pre-breakfast forest hike 2 days ago felt a bit hard, esp. on the way back. Not at all happy with the heart-rate pattern. Did drink plenty of water and walked slower than usual. In retrospect, should have worn my hat a lot earlier than I did.Regardless it was great to experience nature. I hadn't seen that many mature deep-purple cacti blooms all at one place before. The "three mushketeers" also looked good (see pic).#hike #hiking #health #forest #nature #photography

6.8km hike yesterday (Thursday) in a different Bavarian forest (this one belongs to a city). Fantastic network of world-class trails with lots of activity and learning "pfade" (paths) for kids and adults. Not to forget the towering coniferous and deciduous trees, and the awesome smell of (fresh cut) conifers throughout. My words and pictures don't do justice. 10.3km hike today in fields and forests of Scheyern. Temperature felt like 8C (46F) due to clouds, 27kmph winds.Nothing special about the hike/trails but everything is clean and accessible. Beware the landmark "Keltenschanze" has literally nothing to see except a sign. ๐Scheyern is a beautiful town. I've visited a few times, including the monastery, brewery, and the biergarten. Last Saturday, 11.25km hiking, trekking, and climbing Taubenstein and Rotwand in the Bavarian Prealps. Rode the lift up to save time and thus the trek and climb up was not too demanding. The steep hike down to Spitzingsee however was taxing, as reported by my glutes the next day. ๐ฃThe weather was perfect for the outing and everyone had a great time. Just looked over the stats from Monday's 18.3km hike/walk โ๏ธ. Quite happy with pace, heart rate, and other aspects. Of course, I could do better.BTW this is my longest walking activity since I started long walks ~2 years ago. However I have had a 18km pure hiking activity, making this 18.3km hike/walk unquestionably less demanding. My goal is to complete a 25km walk, but finding a pleasant setting and enough time (~6 hrs) is hard.
