@Wolven Definitely feel like I'm seeing a lot more "twitter style" antagonism in recent months, though for reasons not clear to me I manage to miss a lot of the mansplaininess. (I think I could take that as a sort of insult-by-omission if I wanted, but that would be antagonistic & I don't have the energy.)

@Wolven I joined in November 2022, when Elon bought Twitter.I know every time he does something else dumb on Twitter, people flock to Mastodon.That includes people who are assholes.I'm hoping that most of them migrate to other platforms where they can more easily get their voices amplified. I expect there to be peaks and troughs while this settles.From a "bad actor" point of view, Mastodon is great for harassing people. You can create as many accounts as you want on whatever instances you want to get around blocks and mutes. It's not so great if you want your trolling to go viral as it is much harder for stuff to get boosted across the entire space.I'm hoping their use cases lean toward the latter.

@Wolven @naomilawsonjacobs The Scold Squad energy is really strong, isn't it? 😕I'm staying away from Bluesky (for nerdy purity reasons that I don't expect other people to share), so I've really increased my blocking and muting here. But I'm not surprised other people don't want to bother with that, and it feels like we've lost a lot of nice, fun people.

The messiness of the world, the specific and intentional disregulation and deprioritization of trying to be approach strangers and near strangers with compassion, the growing awareness of this place by bad actors who seek to cause pain and negative chaos. They're all bound and bundled up, but they aren't the Same thing.

@Wolven My opinion on why Mastodon gets so much drama:1) Longer toots means more exhausting replies.2) Few tools to bully bad-actors - hidden reply-likes, no reply-like notifications, no downvote, replies have hyper-low visibility, no QTs. Bullying is bad generally, but sometimes needed.3) Fundamentally, part of the reason we're here is that governance matters. Sometimes governance is inherently messy.

@Wolven @wonkothesane My optimistic take is that we’re a ways away from another service establishing a lock-in monopoly like Twitter did. I think the fedi, BlueSky, and Threads are all around for the long term, and there will certainly be other places still to come.

The lateral violence, own-goal-ing, and main character syndrome here are pretty unbearable and I'm not even a person on whom this falls directly.(IMO Bluesky is not the answer, for a variety of reasons, but this place was also better before some of the people who left to go there left, and I acknowledge that for sure)

@Wolven I wonder how server specific this is? My@experience has been 20000% less “toxic” than Instagram (the only corporate platform I’ve used in the past 8 years). I pretty much have only felt like I’ve engaged with one “toxic” discourse my 2 ish years of being on mastodon. Do other people think toxicity depends on your home instance ?

@Wolven Kinda selfishly hope you stick it out and thins improve simply because, though everything you say is true, yours is one of the voices and perspectives I'm regularly grateful to be able to come across here... That said, I have been on various instances for years now and I am increasingly sceptical that Mastodon will ever be able to curb the aggro that makes many people feel unsafe without ripping itself up in the process; more likely it won't do this at all but will still rip itself up in the process.

@Wolven @paninid @beep My timeline became a lot more aggressive after the Hamas attack with opinions becoming entrenched and people falling out with each other, but I also see a lot of people advocating for peace, so it's not too bad.There is also a conversation about the use of shared blocklists as a moderation tool that got very heated, even leading to harassment.

@Wolven @beep It really is. I’m starting to see the same thing creeping into BlueSky as well, and I’ve had a couple of REALLY good days of social media on Mastodon (and BlueSky) in the past couple weeks and I’ve been reminded how nice it can be and I want it to stay that way for everyone.
