i like cohost but the one thing i can’t stand about its userbase is all the armchair social media experts that put another “mastodon/federated social media is bad” post every other day. it’s exhausting

everyone’s like “federated social media is a trashfire nightmare because what if the admins of the instance I’m on get into some petty interpersonal drama and decide to defederate” and i mean this without a hint of irony: skill issue. have you tried setting up on an instance run by adults

now, is there an inherent weakness to the suggestion that you should shop around for an instance you want to set up on? yes.do larger instances defederate because of petty interpersonal drama? also yes.there are genuine weaknesses to fedi, just like there are for every social media platform. cohost users act like everything is going to be perfect because cohost is run by a worker-owned coop as if those have never faced any operational challenges that compromise their principles throughout history

i have been lucky enough to have my experience with fedi be one not of “large clusters of instances talk to each other until they don’t and we all have to migrate like a flock of birds”, and instead have it be one of “this is a niche community forum that looks like twitter and sometimes there’s crossposting from other niche community forums that also look like twitter”. I’m just saying there seems to be merit to my approach
