I've occasionally complained about the anti-vax people I run into, but today I'm just fed up enough that I'm going to let the inner mean girl who's read entirely too many papers out for a spell.SARS-CoV-2 infects cells via ACE-2, which is one of the blood pressure receptors *that is expressed by almost all cells in the body*. This is unlike essentially every other disease that picks some weird receptor to bind to and only affects skin or respiratory or whatever.🧵😱#Covid #LongCovid

Covid can cause autoimmune encephalitis (with bonus malignant catatonia) even after the acute infection has appeared to pass, leaving someone fighting to regulate even basic stuff like blood pressure in the ICU for a month: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.07.23.20160770v1(Plus Covid can cause lots of other fun times new onset psychiatric stuff, but this paper is a “favorite" for the sheer WTFery.)2/

Pregnancy:Covid can cause placenta abnormalities in pregnant people (which can cause stillbirths): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7827584/The oxygen demands of a pregnancy and then catching Covid can, and have, landed previously healthy young pregnant people fighting for their lives on ECMO. Often, they do not survive. Unfortunately, pregnant people are one of the least-vaccinated segments in the US.3/

Intestines!Pre-pandemic, it was believed that coronaviruses couldn't survive through the high-acidity human stomach to make it to the small intestine. Sadly untrue.https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03207-w"Immunofluorescence and PCR analyses of intestinal biopsies obtained from asymptomatic individuals at 4 months after the onset of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) revealed the persistence of SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acids and immunoreactivity in the small bowel of 7 out of 14 individuals."5/

Intestines, p2FOUR MONTHS LATER, the virus is still active in the small intestine in a significant fraction of people (small sample due to the before/after biopsies). Now we know, it's far worse than that: there's some evidence that long covid has some bacteriophage behavior. So now we have a virus that infects humans AND their bacterial symbiants:https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35632464/ is the start of that research.6/

BrainsI'll just also mention: herpesvirus family reactivation is another aspect of #Covid infections:https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2023.07.23.23293046v1…and it was recently documented that vaccination against shingles prevented almost 20% of dementia onset cases in Wales:https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2023.05.23.23290253v1So that will be Fun Times in 20-40 years for sure.7/

This is not a cold. It's not the flu. It's fucking devastating, and I recently lost a friend to it.Check your privilege (and survivorship bias), and actually get REAL facts about the SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, because you or a friend's lives actually depend upon being vaccinated. And boosted. And masked. Thanks!#Covid #LongCovid8/fin (I think)

@deirdresm covid is just the flu for normal people, those who have been poisoned by big pharma "medicines" and injections will be hit hard because their whole system if toxic

(As a note, I often link to the preprints of things, and I get that these aren't final, but in many cases the final version's in a for-$ publication, so it's kinder to others not in the field. Also, it's a facebook comment, so I've left gobs of connective tissue out, I just wanted someone to drop their anti-vax BS.)

@deirdresm Covid finally caught me last month, thanks to a friend that didn’t mask on a plane. Now I get to worry about possible long-term effects, and what we don’t know about whether the virus can reactivate years later, ala polio or chickenpox viruses.

@IdahoLark Chicken pox (and the entire herpesvirus family) manage to do it because they infect nerve cells (which have some immune privilege), but then go into a dormant phase. Because they're DNA viruses, they become part of the host cell, and thus are replicated if the cell divides.Polio hangs out in the gut where there are about a billion viruses, most of which aren't (in theory) pathogenic to humans.

@IdahoLark So far as I know (and this is not well understood), it's remaining neuron damage from the initial infection. One of the leading polio researchers in the US is the host of the This Week in Virology podcast, and he is so prolific I don't watch most of his videos at this point. But he probably knows as much as anyone.
