This is not a cold. It's not the flu. It's fucking devastating, and I recently lost a friend to it.Check your privilege (and survivorship bias), and actually get REAL facts about the SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, because you or a friend's lives actually depend upon being vaccinated. And boosted. And masked. Thanks!#Covid #LongCovid8/fin (I think)

(As a note, I often link to the preprints of things, and I get that these aren't final, but in many cases the final version's in a for-$ publication, so it's kinder to others not in the field. Also, it's a facebook comment, so I've left gobs of connective tissue out, I just wanted someone to drop their anti-vax BS.)

@IdahoLark Hey, thanks for that paper, I hadn't read it yet. :O

@IdahoLark Chicken pox (and the entire herpesvirus family) manage to do it because they infect nerve cells (which have some immune privilege), but then go into a dormant phase. Because they're DNA viruses, they become part of the host cell, and thus are replicated if the cell divides.Polio hangs out in the gut where there are about a billion viruses, most of which aren't (in theory) pathogenic to humans.

@IdahoLark So far as I know (and this is not well understood), it's remaining neuron damage from the initial infection. One of the leading polio researchers in the US is the host of the This Week in Virology podcast, and he is so prolific I don't watch most of his videos at this point. But he probably knows as much as anyone.

@JonathanMBR For more context on how deeply effed up DRC is, I highly recommend the plucky Belgian travelogue from 2010 as they cross the country (first to do so in 20 years).Coca Cola gave up on distribution in DRC, it’s *that* bad.https://forum.expeditionportal.com//threads/democratic-republic-of-congo-lubumbashi-to-kinshasa.50799/

@mjg59 Strangely, yes. Throughout the late 80s and into 1990, I did occasional temp stints in El Torito Marketing (in Irvine) between programming gigs. The El Torito Grill was the only ET-branded property actually in Irvine at that time (and as late as 1998, when I returned to Irvine from the east coast).

If you want real analysis (and not just blather) about the strategy of the Russia/Ukraine war, there's no better short-form (<15 min) video source than @anderspuck .His latest video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhyB9JWQzig

Haven’t heard back from the team I was allegedly returning to, so I’m looking for a #swift position for macOS or other Apple OS.Most recently, wrote small internal apps for video production process for Apple.com videos (e.g., WWDC, all the keynotes, and the product release videos).Boosts appreciated.

It’s not very often you get to use a homonym pairing like this. 🤣Me: I bruised my coccyx.Rick: Poor you!Me: Really! How are they ever going to conquer the Steppes now?[I had a nasty fall straight backward on Weds. we’ve determined nothing’s broken, but I’m sore AF.]

@thj Which is kind of odd; the placenta isn’t created by the pregnant person, but by the ZEF (zygote/embryo/fetus).

@thj I don't think I've ever heard it done on steel guitar before. (Which is pretty amazing given how much Hawaiian music I've heard and how common steel guitar is in the genre.)In fact, this version would be right at home in Hawaii.

@thj Yep, pretty much 4000 km from anywhere. We sailed from San Francisco to Sydney 10 years ago, and our first stop was Hawaii. (Second was Tabuaeran, Kiribati: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabuaeran )

@blogdiva As someone in a county that voted 78% for Biden and had 86% turnout, I’m not sure where to focus my efforts, because local-to-me isn’t a problem. I have a small family with no one in swing or red states.Best I can do is try to extend my reach by amplifying others and contributing to tight races, particularly those with liberal to progressive candidates.

@inthehands @blogdiva Great metric. Because of the potential crisis in secretaries of state, I’ve been focusing on those races, particularly in swing states.I’ve also been looking at AG races as that affects a ton of people’s lives. A good AG/DA vs. a bad one can be a huge change in local justice, particularly in states with abortion restrictions.
