#FPQuestion of the day:Given the vast variety of pens and related items—and the ease of going crazy with acquisitions—what are some tips or ways to control spending or reduce impulse buying while keeping the hobby interesting and fresh?#FountainPens

@penfount@penfount.social I try to limit myself to no more than two pen models from any one company. If I really think on it and decide there is something else I want from that same company, I'll try to first sell whichever of the models I already have from them that I like the least. So far, the only exception is that I have three Kaweco fountain pens BUT two are vintage. If I look at my current "Wants" list, the only other exception I might make any time soon is with Pilot because they make some truly unique and varied models.

@penfount To control spending: *Don't Look*. Hard stop. This means no #FountainPen related content: audio, visual, textual. If you have a friendly local brick and mortar store, eliminate or limit your visits. To keep the hobby interesting and fresh, go deep: take up in earnest one or more of the adjacent hobbies, like #handwriting, #sketching, #calligraphy. You may need to purchase a few things to do so, but not too many.

@penfount I made a spreadsheet of pen characteristics I wanted to try. Filling systems. Materials. Nib materials. Nib sizes. Then I could look for something to tick of boxes (ebonite section, titanium nib, etc)

@penfount buy a nice pen case. Once it is filled, you have to trade or sell to buy new ones. Since I can't sell and I don't trade, my collection hasn't changed in a year or so. I just rotate pens in use.

@aj old Kaweco and new Kaweco are essentially two separate companies anyway so that logic is valid
