Anybody here uses proton mail? I have been looking for alternatives to Gmail, seems that #protonmail is a good choice overall. The payment plan also includes a vpn, which is also something I don't have atm. Anyone had any bad experiences with it?

@djrmarques I used Protonmail a while ago and the experience what not very good, except when you only want to use their web interface. It is not easy to connect with native IMAP/SMTP clients to their system, you need to have a "bridge" installed. That bridge didn't work most of the time.Having standard IMAP/SMTP access (especially when doing email with Emacs et al). Also on mobile you are stuck with their proprietary App, there is no way to use the native email client of your OS.Since email is transmitted between servers decrypted anyways, I really don't see the point to have a service like Protonmail.I use Fastmail btw.

@louis Thanks for your input. Yeah I was also considering FastMail. Proton Mail seems more interesting to me since they are more focused on security I guess. But are you saying that there is no privacy benefit of using Proton Mail over Fast Mail?

@louis @djrmarques just want to add my personal experience here as a more layman tech user: the protonmail “bridge” worked perfectly fine for me when coupled with Thunderbird and macOS, for multiple years. i have recently settled for the web client, however (which i am enjoying so far), because Thunderbird (iirc) has an inconvenient way of distinguishing between labels/folders

@djrmarques It really depends on what kind of privacy you are looking for. ProtonMail will not protect you from authority requests and has a history of handing over data to the government from activists:https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-58476983To sign up and pay you need to provide a payment method, so your account will not be anonymous. They receive venture capital from EU and US funds. Also: ProtonMail does not encrypt the subject line and will log your IP address. When you send emails to external recipients, they will not be encrypted unless you use their PGP feature and the recipient is able to use that, too. But for sending PGP encrypted email, you can basically use any email provider.I'm not saying that ProtonMail does break any promises, I just feel that the privacy gain is very limited, for which you pay a price in money and limited features (i.e. having to use the ProtonMail bridge to access your emails from IMAP/SMTP clients). Also their search is subpar.Just because it runs under Swiss jurisdiction does not protect you from authority requests from the EU or US, since the Swiss government usually complies with their requests. Tutanota might a better option, they allow for fully anonymous accounts with Bitcoin, Monero or even snail mail cash payment. Their 3€/month plan has tons of features. They fully encrypt everything including the subject line and have a full description of their process:https://tutanota.com/encryption/

@louis For me what's important is they don't sell/use my data, and that the company has a reliable security, so that the risk of them getting hacked and my emails leaked is minimal. But I suppose for my usecase, Fast Mail would be equally as good. Thanks for this discussion!

@djrmarques I use runbox mail service because it is cheap to bring your own domain and have multiple accounts. Works great with IMAP and I have zero complaints about it
