I deleted the #Canadian Covid exposure app because no one was using it— in privacy “exposure notifications” is still an option— can someone help me, how do I remove the app entirely? #Apple #privacy #tech

@LALegault I just checked in Privacy again. Exposure notifications is still there, but when I check it, I see a big notice saying “Your health authority has turned off exposure notifications”.

@98Percent mine does not have that, it informs me since location services are not enabled to it, exposure notifications are off.

@LALegault Then I would say you are safe from government tracking. But exposure notifications is a service that comes built into the phone OS, so you can’t remove it, but you can disable it by not allowing location tracking for the app that uses it.But… I am not an Apple expert. Have a peaceful day (or whatever it is over there) and don’t worry 🙂

@98Percent I’m not worried about them trackiing *me* specifically, but I am having a conversation with someone else in this thread and it appears you can’t remove the app entirely and if location services is enabled, it still shares that information in Canada even if the app is deleted.

@LALegault that’s because location services is not itself an app. It is, I think, a feature of the Apple Health app.

@LALegault @98Percent Maybe this will help - an explainer from MacRumours:https://www.macrumors.com/guide/exposure-notification/It looks like they put a lot of thought into how to track exposures without actually passing personal information. Although, there is still all the other stuff your phone is leaking via apps and location services, etc. 🤷♂️

@LALegault @MichaelPorter @98Percent Apple likely left the setting in software as long as some places were using it. It collects a key that only your health unit can decode. And since they no longer support it, nobody can decode it. If they did decode it as a result of an exposure, they'd have enough info to telephone or email you.The keys are collected by Bluetooth if you are near to someone with the app. But it's easy enough to get Bluetooth info.

@dan613 @MichaelPorter @98Percent During the course of the conversation in this thread the feature completely disappeared from my phone. I have Pegasus running on my phone and not a clear understanding how to remove it when everything is connected to icloud.
