@LALegault I just checked in Privacy again. Exposure notifications is still there, but when I check it, I see a big notice saying “Your health authority has turned off exposure notifications”.

@LALegault Then I would say you are safe from government tracking. But exposure notifications is a service that comes built into the phone OS, so you can’t remove it, but you can disable it by not allowing location tracking for the app that uses it.But… I am not an Apple expert. Have a peaceful day (or whatever it is over there) and don’t worry 🙂

@LALegault that’s because location services is not itself an app. It is, I think, a feature of the Apple Health app.

Our #corruption perception index rating has dropped another place to 4th in 2024.Not surprising, given the current government's blatantly obvious shenanigans, but disappointing all the same. I used to be proud of our integrity and it doesn't feel good to be on a declining team. I'm also surprised we haven't heard more of this on the media. #NZpol

@strypey @Powareverb you may well be right. I think you missed the point that the index is based on perceptions, which may or may not be reality. However, our current government seems to be much more obvious about their corruption.

Come on Aotearoa New Zealand! If a Chinese city can do it, we can too. But of course, our government is owned by big oil (along with other parts of the #broligarchy) #nzpol #renewables #climate #CleanEnergy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=909LMl-cpBo

If I wanted to de-corporatise my online life as much as possible, what phone should I use? iPhone or Android. If Android, which brand? I'm iPhone at the moment, but Linux desktop and laptop, with a Mac Mini M1 tucked away in the cupboard (just in case) because I no longer use it. I'd like good integration with all my devices. I've pretty much de-Microsofted myself, but currently a LONG way to go with Google. #Apple #android #linux #linuxmint #privacy #security

Motueka has become quite a growth "market" for Linux conversions lately. We have just today launched a local bulletin board to support all those new users in the region. If you are interested in #linux feel free to join (if you live in Aotearoa / New Zealand - access is restricted)https://www.island42.net/taslinux/

@lightweight I started offering a conversion service through our local repair cafe and it took off. I was amazed by the amount of interest. People seem to be pretty sick of Microsoft!

After at least 30 years, I no longer have a #microsoft account. My next step is to #degoogle at least to the point that I can get by with a free account. My #apple account will take a bit more addressing, but its days are numbered too.It all feels quite liberating!

If you are an author who uses #markdown, what app do you use for your #writing ? I am relatively new to Markdown and have begun using #Joplin for my note-taking, mainly because it works best across all platforms (iOS, MacOS, Android, Linux) via my #NextCloud server. My needs are relatively simple because I currently only write short articles and social media posts. I'm thinking of using Joplin for everything because I am enjoying it so much. I also have some experience with Obsidian and Ghostwriter for markdown writing. Any thoughts from more experienced markdown users than me?

@lightweight @cousinsd Joplin works great on all platforms that I use, so I'll stick with that for my general note-taking for now. What I love about markdown is the ability to switch apps without worrying about compatibility.I'll also try Joplin for my writing as well, probably.

@Iveyline @strypey Forgive me for butting in, but it all depends on what your needs are, as to whether Linux will work for you, and how hard it is. If your computing needs are simple home office sort of things, it will probably work well. If you have more specialised needs, you need to do some research before making the change. For example, I have no IT training, but have switched fully to Linux and have set up my own personal cloud server. The latter with Claude AI holding my hand every step of the way! There are versions of Linux now that make converting a PC to Linux very simple now, and unless you have special requirements, you can do it without diving into the terminal at all.You can also try Linux without making any permanent changes to your computer at all AND there is the dual boot option, where you can keep your Windows system and install Linux alongside it.Happy to talk to you about my experience if you like, but I have already warned you I am not an expert!
