Not enough people are loudly and publicly upset about the fact that basically no free search engine is okay anymore.Like I'm seriously longing for fucking AltaVista at this point what the fuck.

@Wolven that stinks. I hadn't heard that. I really thought Google was great twenty years ago. Hate it now.

@Wolven indeed. This is what I want from a search engine:I put in a search. The search engine shows me pages that have the terms I searched for (not some of them, or what it thinks I meant, or pages it thinks are related to what it thinks I'm searching for. )If this is 1 page - just show me that one page. If this is 10,000,000 pages, break it up, rank them (showing me how recent they are if you can tell) & let me refine my search. I start to refine the engine can makes suggestions

@Wolven It's going to have to be islands of curated links reachable through a chain of verifiably real people who can be trusted to trust other people to be knowledgeable on certain keywords. Yes, this means that in the future you will need to be 6 degrees of separation from an undisputed expert in your favorite prurient kink in order to find the good stuff. But also linked to people who know about robots and mushrooms and 6th century art history, or whatever.

@alan Mmm, no, not really. There were specific moments when search engines shifted from a free, public facing, problem solving tool, to a platform on which advertising happened, and then again to an Advertising Business.

@lawlznet ddg is basically just a bing portal, startpage is a google portal sans trackers etc so results will have the same problems, and I've not yet tried searx

@crcollins As a company they seem fine, but they're still running bing architecture, so those results problems will translate there too

@Wolven While that's true, once the web exploded even AltaVista relied on sponsorship revenue, which still makes user eyeballs the product.I think it's a universal truth that either something has an quasi-anonymous benefactor, the user pays, or the user is the product.Take Mastodon for example, the users/admins who contribute to the operation of an instance and make it free for everyone else are the quasi-anonymous benefactors.
