One thing I’m missing after Twitter’s collapse as a community hub is conference FOMO. Yes, rn is not a great time to gloat about the amazing time you’re having, but it’s been like that all year.I went to my first PyCon after seeing ppl posting photos and live-tweeting talks all day & I couldn’t take it anymore. We used to mute hashtags! Now all buzz is siloed away to (usually) Discord & I only notice they happened b/c the reminders of ticket sales stop. This can’t be good long-term.

It’s also part of a larger picture: social media as we knew is dead. People aren’t leaving Twitter for Fedi, Bsky, or Threads. Many things we used to do in public we do in private now.Given how much the early 2010s Python community on Twitter has given me in terms of access, insight, & motivation it really makes me sad that ppl today are missing out on that. You’d have to follow a massive Discourse & at least one Discord & deal with that platforms inherent noise to even come close.

Also to be clear: the death of social media as a community hub IMHO started earlier than the takeover. It started when Twitter moved to being more algorithmic and more & more ppl read the same ebook on building an audience on social media.Suddenly public discussions about design decision were replaced by banal-but-interminable threads about “Read on why you NEED to stop using print() 👇” or regular user polls for their favorite package/IDE/…Elon only turbo-charged an existing trend.

The good news is that this is just a circle that closed itself. I’m old enough to remember FOSS project discussions happening in low-key toxic IRC channels. The early 2010s were an anomaly. But we’ve lost a ton of cross-pollination which sucks.
