I find it super wild to see Googlers celebrate Chrome’s 15th birthday and bragging their part in it RIGHT after they tricked their users into the creepiest ad tracking platform with the darkest of dark patterns. I would be ashamed to be part of that. Personal values and integrity are liabilities.

One thing I’m missing after Twitter’s collapse as a community hub is conference FOMO. Yes, rn is not a great time to gloat about the amazing time you’re having, but it’s been like that all year.I went to my first PyCon after seeing ppl posting photos and live-tweeting talks all day & I couldn’t take it anymore. We used to mute hashtags! Now all buzz is siloed away to (usually) Discord & I only notice they happened b/c the reminders of ticket sales stop. This can’t be good long-term.

It’s also part of a larger picture: social media as we knew is dead. People aren’t leaving Twitter for Fedi, Bsky, or Threads. Many things we used to do in public we do in private now.Given how much the early 2010s Python community on Twitter has given me in terms of access, insight, & motivation it really makes me sad that ppl today are missing out on that. You’d have to follow a massive Discourse & at least one Discord & deal with that platforms inherent noise to even come close.

Also to be clear: the death of social media as a community hub IMHO started earlier than the takeover. It started when Twitter moved to being more algorithmic and more & more ppl read the same ebook on building an audience on social media.Suddenly public discussions about design decision were replaced by banal-but-interminable threads about “Read on why you NEED to stop using print() 👇” or regular user polls for their favorite package/IDE/…Elon only turbo-charged an existing trend.

The good news is that this is just a circle that closed itself. I’m old enough to remember FOSS project discussions happening in low-key toxic IRC channels. The early 2010s were an anomaly. But we’ve lost a ton of cross-pollination which sucks.

@glyph @feoh @nedbat The year before wasn’t much better either tho. I think Twitter vs Fedi is one factor, but not the main one. Social media writ large just got less social and more a platform for pontification, outrage, and (self-)marketing.

Heads up everyone using my approach to measuring Python code coverage as detailed in https://hynek.me/articles/ditch-codecov-python/ – GitHub rolled out v4 of upload-artifact that breaks a shitton of workflows including that one.Do NOT update actions/upload-artifact for Coverage to v4. I have added a warning to the top of the blog post and I will try to come up with a new solution.Unfortunately, that’s ANOTHER tone-deaf move by GitHub introducing community-wide breakage & I hope they’ll see reason & help migrate.

One really wonders what drives these community-hostile developments at GitHub.Is this some promotion-driven bullshit where features are shipped that look good in performance review (*checks calendar* oh!) but put thousands of hours of mitigation work on the community because “fuck those suckers, I want a bigger house”?

And because I have absolutely nothing better to do, here’s v2.0.0 of build-and-inspect-python-package https://github.com/hynek/build-and-inspect-python-package/releases/tag/v2.0.0 that you need if you want to use download-artifact@v4

@simon In the end it’s literally the Go approach, except that in Go the version is usually an extra path and not part of the name – but the effect is the same.

TIL: `ValueError: Unknown extraction method 'jinja2’` with recent versions of babel = lack of setuptools. Just add it as another dependency.I’m not gonna admit how long it took me to debug this despite the setuptools removal being in babel’s changelog. 🙈

You’d be surprised how many people who actually hate Python comment on Python videos. In the beginning I was surprised why shadow-banning is such a prominent feature on YouTube but dipping my toes into five-digit views was very illuminating.

It reminds me how incredibly insecure many Go programmers are about Python‘s success. As someone who likes and uses both, I feel regularly genuinely alienated at Go conferences because many speakers – including Rob Pike – can’t help themselves to drop digs against Python for crowd-pleasing.I’m glad the Python community embraced not being contemptuous against others even before we started dominating.

@stfn I honestly doubt he watched the video. It probably got suggested to him and it triggered him and he went on to comment.

It's very on-brand for Mastodon to turn even more obnoxious & sanctimonious as we watch Bluesky sucking in tech Twitter.Ppl KNOW that Mastodon exists—& they hate it. The reasons why they hate it have been known for years but nothing has been done about it.Being condescending to users for wanting to be hand-held or have effective protections against the very reply guys that are going around scolding the impure is just proving them right. No amount of dirt-digging on Bluesky will change that.

@glyph I’m seeing a lot of „lol remember mastodon?“ and „I tried mastodon and it never clicked so I went back to twitter but I can’t do it anymore“Their hate might be a memory from 2022 but that doesn’t make it less real or the reasons ppl bounced off back then less relevant. We can’t even tell them that „Mastodon is good now“ because zero of the major problems from 2022 have been solved.

On one hand I’m super excited how Python’s packaging user land is great now.On the other hand I don’t know if I even want everyone to know how cursed setuptools is and how everything with C/C++/Fortran extensions still runs a setup.py somewhere where the sun doesn’t shine.
