Remember Canonical's crowdfunding campaign for a @ubuntu phone that raised $12 million but failed?Wouldn't it be nice to repeat this and crowdfund for a @gnome phone?Would you buy such a phone?#Gnome #Linux #OpenSource #LinuxPhone #LinuxMobile

@user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome The problem with Linux phones is they don't have the software subsidizing the software, so you often get a "worse deal" if you just look at the sticker price. Which most consumers do.

@user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome i would seriously love ANYTHING that would let me escape the Google/Apple duopoly on phones. I'm not doing quantum computing on my mobile, i just want to have a little computer in my pocket that texts, calls, browses, & offers software solutions such as maps, transit, Fedi, etc.

@itsmeholland @user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome That phone exists. I am using it now. It is called the #Librem5.

@user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome might even consider a basic small digital camera for photography & video tbh. I'm just so tired of every smidgen of data I'm capable of unknowingly leaking being sucked up by the company that makes my cell phone or the apps that run on it lol. 🙄

@user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome This is basically the #Librem5 and the #PinePhone /Pro . I'd love to see more funding and energy go into the software ecosystem for sure! ... but what do you see as the value proposition of Gnome-specific hardware?

@okennedy @user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome One thing that they could attempt to offer would be hardware that is more affordable than the Librem but functions better than the pinephone.

@jlcrawf @user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome That would be nice... but challenging if they *also* want to support software development. I'd be surprised if the parts cost for the Librem5 was significantly greater than the PinePhonePro. The cost difference pays for a team of developers to do the thankless work of power tuning, to work around the sorry state of embedded hardware atm, to upstream kernel patches, etc... 1/2

@jlcrawf @user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome yeeeaaahh it's also like $1k isn't it? Maybe someday in the not-distant future but it's a lot to pay for a device that I don't know anyone who has experience with it 🤷

@user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome Sure, why not? I’m a sucker for Linux mobile projects. I bought the Canonical tablet with pretty low expectations that it utterly failed to meet. I have a Librem 5 that’s not ready for prime time. I really want a Linux phone that lives up to expectations and I’ll keep trying until I get one.

@user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome oh, and I have Pine phone too. It’s okay but also not ready for prime time.

@user8e8f87c I was one of many people who helped to fund that phone, and I was disappointed when it "failed".Almost 4 years ago I ordered a Librem5, somewhat the same idea: running Linux on a phone, instead of commercial stuff that's controlled by someone else.It took a very long time to arrive, and it has little practical use at: the battery won't last more than 4 hours.I'd probably buy a Gnome phone if it's stable and practical enough.

@hans > Librem5 [...]> battery won't last more than 4 hoursIt used to be that bad but has gotten better. I think if you install the latest PureOS software on it now, it should last longer than that now. At least mine does, I think usually somewhere between 6 and 8 hours. Of course that's still not enough to make it through a day, I still need to bring a power bank. But for me, carrying that power bank feels like a small price to pay for being free from Android/iOS.@user8e8f87c

@eliasr Thanks for the hint, I'll have a look at the software later.Carrying a powerbank wouldn't be a real problem, although it's not what you'd want.

@itsmeholland @jlcrawf @user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome I also have a #Librem5, and use it as my daily driver. And, to be honest, it still has some issues. But I trust that this will be solved over time. Therefore I would support a crowdfunding to bring the #LinuxPhones further.

@janvlug @jlcrawf @user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome what are the issues you're having with the Librem 5? Also what about their Liberty Phone? (Which I also saw on their website.) I was also very interested in Librem 14, but same issue, wasn't able to spend 1500 on a new laptop at the time and inherited another modern laptop before then.

@itsmeholland @jlcrawf @user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome The data connection drops often, but there is a work around:https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/OS-issues/-/issues/328The other issue is that the GPS does not work well. But I guess this is a problem specific to my device, which is a quite early one. Also I have to start the hot spot twice. But newer devices get a better supported WiFi module.Even thought I have these little inconveniences, I like the L5 better than any phone I had before.

@janvlug @itsmeholland @user8e8f87c @ubuntu @gnome I have the issue with the wifi dropping. My GPS works well and I have no issues with the wifi hotspot. (Now that I have it going, when I first got my Librem, it took 3 months to get the hotspot to work.)
