MMOs with sub fees have a bots, a fee does not stop botting by itself. In this case it's $1 annual the bot needs to make $1.01 per year and then it's just a matter of scale. I see this as nothing but an attempt to collect credit card information for the eventual Twitter payment system they want to make.

@BrodieOnLinux It'll be interesting to see what happens with BlueSky... I think Elon is behind the curve a bit. Dorsey has the right idea about owning the protocol. He's working on "how can I be the next HTTPS?"

@BrodieOnLinux I think the problem they're trying to solve is a little different than an MMO. Twitter has mass bot signups to make the whack a mole harder for them to get ahead of. When you're making 1000 bot accounts (probably more) the costs add up. Their solution is still more of a speed bump for bots that will probably make them even harder to beat in the long run. I worry that the fee will cause an initial dip in bots and make Musk think it's working until it goes up again in a month.

@BrodieOnLinux you are way more optimistic about the future potential of that website. The credit card information they collect might be better for them to just straight up sell on the dark web, with the odds I'd give them on making it as a payment processing system...

@nicemicro I don't think the payment system is a good idea that is going to work, but that's almost certainly the logic they're using

@BrodieOnLinux @Flux Valve tried this with TF2. It was at least not completely stupid there because I don't think they expected people to pay money just to be assholes.Twitter isn't a dying video game where you have little to no profit incentive. You can do some serious shit with sock puppets and bots, and people would absolutely pay $1 to spread misinfo, unsolicited advertising, etc.

@iagondiscord @Flux The fun thing is all the bots are already paying for Twitter Blue
