@Dasy2k1 @potpie @arclight @Nicovel0 @Pandamoanimum I would love that and want to see it, but one of the big factors preventing that from ever happening is vendor code. It's common to have key portions provided by multiple third-party vendors that license their tech out to lots of manufacturers. They're usually not willing to release that code when just one of their customers goes bankrupt.

@niclas @Nicovel0 @Dasy2k1 @potpie @arclight @Pandamoanimum Refrigerators are one of the few appliances that you're actually better off replacing every 10-15 years. That's generally how long advances in refrigerant chemicals and hardware improvements make a new fridge cheaper (in electricity costs) than keeping an old one.

@troed @arstechnica I see it as just another "Nintendo thing". They've been re-releasing their games since before the GTA franchise even existed. I have 6 different copies of Ocarina of Time (and a seventh if you count Nintendo Switch Online). Many of those copies introduced updates/improvements. And the Mario franchise does just as many remixes of their games as well.

@BrodieOnLinux One of my favorite quotes about JavaScript development is from jQuery creator John Resig who once said (and I’m paraphrasing) “JavaScript developers are in a constant state of rediscovering computer science”.

@BrodieOnLinux I think the problem they're trying to solve is a little different than an MMO. Twitter has mass bot signups to make the whack a mole harder for them to get ahead of. When you're making 1000 bot accounts (probably more) the costs add up. Their solution is still more of a speed bump for bots that will probably make them even harder to beat in the long run. I worry that the fee will cause an initial dip in bots and make Musk think it's working until it goes up again in a month.

@futurebird This story isn't true at all. The $150M budget is for all police time within the subway system, not just farebeaters. And the cost of turnstile jumpers is more like $690M (for 2022). Whether it's worth pursuing is a different discussion, but the statement in that headline is false. https://www.transittalent.com/articles/index.cfm?story=New_York_MTA_Fare_Evasion_5-17-2023

@futurebird Assuming Tesla has sold 6 million vehicles in total (the exact number is probably lower, but not far off) that bonus is equivalent to almost $10k for every vehicle they've ever sold. That's on top of his existing compensation. Even if one were to argue it was "deserved", I don't see how that works out financially. The company's revenue has been slowing down; that kind of compensation bump seems irresponsible just looking at the business side of things.

@foone The 3 people who purchased HD-DVD movies would be very upset if they needed this.

@BrodieOnLinux If it's a Short I think it's alright since the voice is a bit of a meme unto itself. But for long form content, I see it as a signal that a channel is run by a bot so I block in most cases.I'm still conflicted about it though, because I've come across instances where I get the impression the channel author is not a native English speaker (or unable to speak for another reason) but otherwise is creating unique/original content and TTS is an accessibility tool there, so 🤷♂️

@eff @404mediaco Wouldn't cutting power to a building be cheaper and more effective in 99% of situations than this?

@mjdxp @BrodieOnLinux The more plausible-sounding solution I've seen floated is to spin Chrome off into an independent company, with Google/Microsoft/etc still existing as contributors to the project (similar to how Mozilla operate), but not with complete control as they have now. There would have to be specifics worked out, but my guess is that if Chrome spun off it would look something like that.
