@meena FSF has been explicitly anti-capitalist and this is the whole reason GPL was shunned by companies, then the corporate world started making a big push for permissive licenses that allowed companies to freeload

@yogthos @meena I'm pretty certain FSF has always gone out of their way to say "we aren't anti-capitalist! we want to free software, not people!" at every opportunity presented.

@rml @yogthos @meena Yup, they also make sure they state GPL licenses let you SELL the code. Or you can sell the builds, or whatever. They are not against the market.RMS has stated his political views, but he also has said free software is compatible with right wing and left wing politics. (and it is!)

@yogthos Using Free Software in commercial applications is a thing, but it's not a theft or transfer of assets, because software is zero marginal cost. The inverse of this argument was made by Microsoft in the 1990s arguing why government use of FLOSS was bad for the American economy.I worked as a sys-admin for the government for over a decade and our use of Free Software saved the taxpayers enormous amounts of money.

@yogthos"The capitalist class" means "humanity as a whole." Capitalist theory is just a formalization of the way humans naturally behave in groups. That's why every other economic theory is framed as a replacement for it.

You can not advocate for free software and then complain about others using it at the same time.That being said: Big tech also contributes to open-source. You are trying to frame it like the lottery: Many contribute for the benefit of few, but that’s not how it works. Few developers are contributing to something everybody can use. It’s literally the opposite of lottery.
