@futurebird well, they do sell the money by spending it. but if the government makes profit by printing money, there's a name for that: inflation.and obviously just because the government profits doen't mean its subjects do.the subjects carry all the costs of minting, whether or not the government profits from it. the question is whether they recieve something worthwile in return.

ContraPoints' conspiracy video reminded me how conspiracy theories are an outgroth of authoritarian thinking. for an antiauthoritarian, it's often pretty straighforward to look at social dysfunction and see power relations that seem to cause it. but an authoritarian can't do that, they by-and-large drank the kool-aid of government legitimacy. for them, the power itself can't be the problem. the problem must be _who_ is in power.

@tml FOSS does not require copyright, because public domain (= uncopyrighted) software is accepted under both FSF and OSI definitions.there are successful public domain software projects, see SQLite.the main purpose of FOSS licenses is to limit the damage done by copyright.the purpose of copyright is to create a monopoly, and FOSS licenses are desiged to defy monopoly privieges. @tml it also seems to me that the more restrictve licenses like (L)GPL do not prevent the more abusive uses FOSS software.WebKit and blink are partially LGPL licensed. Android uses the GPL-licensed Linux kernel, yet many Android devices make it virtually impossible to exchange the operating system.i think it's implausible that the abuses of the Android ecosystem would be possible, if drivers and hardware could not be copyrighted.@rechelon

pet peeve: "good intentions".if the intentions consistently cause bad things, then they just aren't very good. yeah, it's based on bad reasoning/understanding. it always is, that's how evil happens.how else are these intentions supposed to be "good"? by making people feel good about themselves?even people who think they "do evil on purpose" are just semantically confused. they still act according to their own values. though their confusion probably doesn't help with having good ones.
