I have no issues whatsoever with people wanting to be on Bluesky; in fact, if it hastens the demise of Twitter/X which now seems beyond repair, I’m personally all for it- as far as politics, cat pictures, thoughts on the world in general etc are concernedbut I don’t understand how moving *science discourse* to a for profit, invite only, platform is in any way compatible with the goals of open science and science reform.am I missing something?

I kinda agree. But bluesky isn't worse then twitter in that respect either and the at protocol should allow bridges. But a much better alternative is #nostr

@UlrikeHahn are scientists moving off of Twitter primarily driven by open science reform though? Picking a for profit basis for scientific communication is par for the course unfortunately, so picking BS seems about right.Science, as a profession, seems childishly allergic to taking control of their work/industry. I’d bet the Fedi feels a bit too much like that.Plus, a decentralised anti-public square platform is maybe unattractive, and BS’s model genuinely more appealing?

@maegul @UlrikeHahn It might be even more basic than that.I have an English degree, and work in IT (UX design). When I first joined Mastodon, I thought I could only see and post to the instance I was on. "It's like email" didn't help me picture how it worked until I already knew how it worked. And now I love it, but I needed to experience it to understand it. If someone has the wrong info and is already overwhelmed, they might not be willing to try.

@eyrea @maegul @UlrikeHahn I found Mastodon made a lot more sense to me when I started thinking about it as a weirder looking version of blogging https://simonwillison.net/2022/Nov/8/mastodon-is-just-blogs/

@simon @eyrea @UlrikeHahn Generally, very much agree and have pushed for a more “blog-ish” approach and perspective elsewhere. With mastodon though, the “skinning” as Twitter is significant.500 char limits (for most) along with lack of formatting and post portability … all arguably make for a pretty poor blogging platform.Of course, not an ActivityPub limitation, at all. Eg, everyone self hosting #lemmy instances with personal communities would probably be a better blogosphere.

@UlrikeHahn When I joined Mastodon it was a struggle to find people to follow. (Still is!) When I joined Bluesky it was easy. That's it, 100%.

@BenMonreal You're absolutely correct, and it's the most important thing to solve for Mastodon right now. Some clients (Mammoth) have taken it upon themselves to start doing follow recommendations, and it's my hope that us server admins will be able to select instance-specific ways of handling it soon.Regarding BlueSky, as soon as they open their promised federation there will be gateways between them and Mastodon making interoperability seamless anyway.@UlrikeHahn

@UlrikeHahn completely agree. But also recognise that not everyone has the time or motivation to hang around and work out how mastodon works...

@Ruth_Mottram @UlrikeHahn That is funny, because Bluesky is really easy to learn:- hashtags: do not exist. - DMs: do not exist.- GDPR complience: does not exist.- DSA complience: does not exist.- video upload and player: does not exist.- account verification: easy.
