I was feeling on the spot as a customer service rep asked me to spell my name after getting it wrong a few times, and I started coming up with the weirdest words. It started fine: M as in Mary. I as in ... ... ice? G as in generous. N as in Neanderthal. O as in orangutang (since I was looking at that word earlier). I wonder how often something like that happens. Maybe I've been playing too many word games.

@grammargirl I always forget the standard phonetic alphabet works when I have to spell something out over the phone. And use made-up ones 🤦🏻♂️

@grammargirl You could also use the names of elements.M as in Magnesium, I as in Iodine, G as in Gallium, N as in Nitrogen, O as in Oxygen...(I have other ideas but this is the most family-friendly)

@grammargirl I judge the quality of CRS by their familiarity the NATO phonetic alphabet.😀 Here in Aotearoa/NZ it's become (for me) a rarity to interact with any who don't know it, happily.

@grammargirl My comic shop used to have subscriptions/pre-orders in plastic bags behind the counter, sorted by last name. They had problems understanding my last name, so I started spelling with some weird words. After a few times, I just had to say the first two weird words and they’d go “Oh Mr. Kusterer!” 🤣

@grammargirl learn the UN phonetic alphabet. You can google it. Then you can spell your name in a commanding voice to inspire fear and obedience.

@grammargirl I generally use the NATO phonetic alphabet that many others have mentioned here (and yes, I *do* have it memorized — but I'd like to be a little more fluid with it, and I'm thinking of writing a little app to make learning/practicing it easier), but people seem unnerved at "M as in Mike" when they're expecting "M as in Mary".Although you using "M as in Mignon" would be totally boss. Especially in this particular case!(BTW, you want Mike, India, Golf, November, Oscar, Nov again.)

@grammargirl Happened to me recently. I was spelling something using the NATO alphabet and when I got to the letter R, I completely blanked out and blurted out R as in Rainbow. I could swear I heard a giggle on the other end of the line.

@grammargirl Curious, but do you pronounce your name the French way (miɲɔ̃)? I was in a deep discussion on comics with a literature professor buddy of mine at a coffee shop, during which I needed to spell my name to the barista. So without thinking I started to say: A as in Astérix, K as in Krazy Kat…I caught myself at that point. I don’t know if the barista thought i was crazy, but she didn’t flinch. 😊

@cydonian I don't pronounce it the French way. You can hear the pronunciation here: https://behindthegrammar.com/2015/01/how-to-pronounce-mignon-fogarty/(Also, I always knew you can't trust HowToPronounce.com, but now they have an entry for my name, and it's wrong. Ugh.)
