I somehow convinced my boss to get my a 200+ DPI monitor. For the first time in my life, I can comfortably use vector fonts... I've always used bitmap fonts because I get headache of fuzzy, antialiased fonts. This monitor has a high enough DPI that the font actually look good. So, what are good, crisp monospaced terminal/coding fonts? Using IBM Plex Mono for now, and like it so far.It has to have italic and bold variants, and legible oO0lII, obviously.

@dnkl PragmataPro (Mono).I was a continuously dissatisfied fonthopper until I got my hands on PragmataPro. 10/10, would buy again, worth every cent.

@dnkl I love Iosevka — it has quite a few variants, but I build my own. Also, what monitor dod you get? I'm looking for a 200+ at 27" or 28", and preferably 120+ Hz refresh, but I think my eyes will give out before such a thing becomes available.

@smuglispweenie a Samsung viewfinity S9. It's 27".MUCH smaller than my previous monitor. But worth it. I'll likely have to adjust my workflow a bit, and will probably use more fullscreen terminals than before...

@cherti interesting... Whish I could test it before buying though... Don't mind paying, but looking at screenshots isn't the same as actually using it :/

@dnkl @smuglispweenie Good thing then that with river now stacking windows in focus order makes full-screen layouts possible :)

@dnkl I like mildly "playful" fonts, so I use Fantasque Sans Mono. Used Ubuntu Mono before, which I also still like. It's less fun but well legible and usually already in all repos. It's also worth pointing out that rasterizing vector fonts has (anecdotally) better results for dark text on light background, especially if you use hinting, anti-aliasing and subpixel . If you play around with fontconfig and colours for enough hours, you can make vector fonts look decent on almost any screen.

@dnkl I've been using IBM Plex for months now and I really don't see the need to change finally, love it

@lhp I believe I've reason for that (fonts looking worse on dark backgrounds) is due to the lack of gamma correction. That in turn has led to both font creators and rasterization libraries trying to compensate for that. And that means it's not as simple as "start doing gamma correction"...I absolutely hate subpixel antialiasing; the color fringes drive me mad. Luckily it's not really necessary on high DPI monitors.

@dnkl I personally enjoy Berkeley Mono (I believe the author offers a demo version). If you want a more aggressive font, there is also Intel One, which is similar to IBM Plex Mono.

@dnkl that's fair, it's ultimately a leap of faith. For me PragmataPro is quite spot-on, also because it's a little slimmer than others, so more text fits on-screen. It would be worth asking whether the creator might release a test version with only small letters or so, enough to test, but not enough to be really useful. But then again, testing might still be limited anyways. It's definitely an awesome font :D I tried others afterwards and I always come back.
