Have you ever wondered if kids in music really do better in their academics? And why? In my latest article, I share my insight as a music educator, as well as a few links to this topic in the news, on the MAP Family Learning Center website: https://online.mapflc.com/2023/09/28/series-music-and-arts-education-whats-the-point-episode-2-why-music-students-do-better-in-academics/ #MusicEducation #MusicInEducation #STEAMeducation #ArtsEducation #MusicArtProgramming

I know many musicians but very few of them (including myself) are also doing fine in math, physics and other sciences. the most students of Conservatory have very poor knowledge of math and I cannot say musical education contributes to mathematical skills per se. a person may develop both skills: musical hearing and musical skills and the skill of abstract thinking, logics and scientific methods of research. but one does not include the other.

Colleague @wolftune reminded me about these posts he made on the subject in 2008. They're great reads -- you should read them!* https://blog.wolftune.com/2008/06/what-is-whole-point-of-music.html* https://blog.wolftune.com/2008/06/benefits-of-music-study.html#Music #MusicEducation #MusicInEducation

P.S. considering following me on Fedi: I speak some languages but the most posts are in Russian. I speak English, Italian and a couple of other languages which I sometimes use for posts, and I write about music, vocal, programming and tea. but I'm quite lazy to put it all in English and following me will also flood your feed with Russian politics and all that dung we had a disaster to plunge into lately. which may be an undesirable side effect. I just warned you.

@iron_bug That's a good point. Certainly, to achieve a sustained ability to transfer knowledge across disciplines, a person needs to learn how to think and reflect upon their knowledge in a cross-disciplinary way. Otherwise, they can get into a bit of a rut.I believe I've read a paper that says as much. Once I dig it up, I'll share it.

learning implies the flexibility of mind, first of all. learning new skills takes efforts on breaking old mind patterns and creating new ones. building new neural circuits. this is not exactly "academincs" thinking, this is the ability to see new ways of doing well-known things that defines the capability for learning. and the most people get quite rigid in this ability with ageing. so they rarely master many different skills.

perhaps I should think to split my profile to different languages/themes, etc. but I'm not sure I would cope with maintaining all that in a consistent way. I mark posts with language tags but not sure if tags can be used for filtering posts by users on other instances. looks like subscribing to tags is not available on Fediverse.

@iron_bug The concept I'm getting at is "teaching for transfer." So, explicitly mentoring in a way that helps foster a lifelong interest in cross-disciplinary study and discovery.Adding this link mainly for my own benefit, so I can pick this up later: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=teaching+for+transfer

I don't know what exactly sparks the interest to learning and improves curiosity. seems, some people are just too lazy to learn something. they don't like to make mental efforts. I liked to learn things since I can remember myself. but I cannot say anybody specially pushed me in this way. it was just my own interest to the world around. and I learnt myself, in general. but I'm introvert and maybe such people are more capable to concentrating, preferring books and experiments to just roaming around outside. I read enormous number of books on everything in childhood. and as an adult I learned some skills in depth and still learn new things. I always work on my skills. but the most people I see around are not interested in learning anything new and they don't think learning is funny.
