@electronwarier calling it now, @eriner didn't kill himself. Though I do not disagree with the hatred for fiat in the least. It IS much harder to act on such thoughts when you have a large family with small children like I do :( Go be free, for those of us that are trapped.

@eriner I've wondered, why not just use literal gold coins? Gold-backed requires a central location for the backing, which is a single point of failure to get Gaddafi'd.People could just trade those CostCo gold tablets, and these days there must be an easy spectroscopy tool to verify that it's real gold element.

@electronwarier @Sum_ID he's the silk road guy. I don't think it's a great analogy though because he didn't issue his own currency afaik, just used bitcoin.

@libertyordeath bitcoin sucks. All trackable. Will eventually be outlawed by the government(s) if the bankers can't control 90+% of the supply.

@BoredStupid It's possible that stamping coinage could be percieved as illegal and a violation of 18 U.S. Code § 486: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/486Paper certificates of exchange are likely completely legal, however.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_dollar_(private_currency)

@curtis @eriner a lot. Probably tens of thousands of dollars worth could fit in a (admittedly heavy) wallet, more value than you'd want to carry in a wallet.Volume and even weight aren't the issue. Small denominations, legality, and getting other people to accept it as currency (adoption) are the problems. Otherwise, I think it'd be a great alternative to cash for the physical world. But most of that is problems *any* USD alternative faces.I mainly bring it up as an alternative to gold-backed physical currency, asking the question: why keep the gold stored as a backing when it could be the intrinsic value in the currency itself? And I ask because I genuinely don't know the answer. Maybe there is a good reason that I don't know. Why was there a transition from medieval gold coins to gold-backed paper? In the anime Spice and Wolf, there are silver and gold coins, but it's complicated because all the different kingdoms issue their own coins of varying metal-purity that even varies over time, as they dilute the purity some years. This leads to speculation and the literal origin of the saying "the bad money chases out the good", because if the kingdom says one year's coins are worth the same as the next, but the next year's are diluted, then people will melt down the more pure coins, removing them from circulation. But as I mentioned before, modern gagdets with spectroscopy may be able to allow easy verification, and even paper money has counterfeiting, so it's not a problem only for gold/silver.

@aven @curtis the coin clipping problem is precisely why the Feds have the constitutional authority to mint coinage, rather than leave that to the states. Of course like all statute, this has been (falsely) interpreted over time as an authority to issue legal tender generally. The feds do NOT have this authority, but have dreamed up a contrived interpretation of a combination of Constitutional statutes to claim they can enforce their illegal “legal tender” laws.

@eriner @aven The closest Texas came to restoring the Constitutional mandate of gold and silver as legal tender was in 2017.https://constitution.congress.gov/browse/essay/artI-S10-C1-3/ALDE_00001099/

@aven @eriner Here is an argument for states enforcing gold and silver as legal tender, causing a reverse Gresham’s Law effect, of good money driving out the badhttps://blog.tenthamendmentcenter.com/2017/04/texas-bill-would-establish-gold-and-silver-as-legal-tender-take-on-federal-reserve-money-monopoly/
