@ai6yr Its a DC3. "The only replacement for a DC3 is another DC3"Those planes are almost nigh-indestructible.

@ncweaver @ai6yr I read somewhere that no DC-3 ever experienced spontaneous structural failure (something not caused by a crash or getting shot at). This is an artifact of the pre-CAD days when large fudge factors were common. A lack of pressurization probably also helped reduce metal fatigue.

@davidnewman @ncweaver @ai6yr speaking of WW2 aircraft, I loved watching all those vintage warbirds being used as fire bombers...One time we were in the back country and got a great air show with a B17, either a B24 or B25, something with a twin tail, and a few other very vintage air frames. The B17 in particular was impressive with it crawling just above tree tops at about 10000 ft elevation with wide open throttles going up a box canyon to dump its load.Insane flying from a bygone era.

@davidnewman @ncweaver @ai6yr there's something different about a working B17 with a full load in its bomb bay in tough conditions versus the heritage flights the few remaining airworthy Flying Fortresses do today.We were probably the only people on the ground besides a couple of hot shot crews (that probably jumped out of DC3s) to see that particular air show.I think it was only a year or two later when the USFS forced the retirement of all those vintage airframes.
