Well, I finally have #Debian up and running on my desktop computer, with a working NVidia driver and working wifi. It's been MUCH more of a fight than I feel it should have been, especially getting networking up.Still have to get a proper software development environment going, don't want to keep using #VSCode.

@fedops Look, I used Emacs for 25 years. I gave up more than twenty years ago, because it had fallen too far behind what we'd learned in that time about software ergonomics. It's no better now than it was then: an interesting antique, nothing more.

@simon_brooke @fedopsMost music I listen to is about 100 years old. I wouldn't dismiss it as "interesting antique".I'm older than #Emacs and I wouldn't call myself "an interesting antique, nothing more", but maybe others would.(Writing this in #mastodonEl.)

@debacle whenever I hear "old" I replace that with "efficient" and in software that mostly succeeds.@simon_brooke

@aks @fedops @debacle @simon_brookeI personally don't understand modern "software ergonomics". Some of its principles seem to be "you must have dozens of versions of the same software installed' (eg #python), and "when you distribute a piece of software, also distribute the OS (or almost) it runs on". Go figure. I imagine any kind of software practice is the "right" practice in one historical period or another...
