#celebrateencryption #edri #eff #EU I'm worried about EU's "Child Sexual Abuse Regulation" and its threat to encryption. EU should not stoop down to the level of dictatorial and citizen-controlling regimes. Didn't we learn anything from WWII? People should have the power of preserving democracy and freedom.

@abcdw @goku12 For the past 20+ years I've maintained a bibliography (now at ~13 000 entries) using nothing but #Emacs #auctex & #bibtex mode on what's basically just a text (.bib) file. A short #elisp function also allows me to immediately open the document (say, pdf or djvu) corresponding to the entry, simply by entering F9 anywhere on the entry. This system has several advantages:Emacs's regexp-search together with reftex-citation allow for incredibly powerful and flexible searches through the databaseAny other interaction niceties more or less easily implementable through elisp code. For instance, I have a custom function that abbreviates a selected piece of text according to ISO 4 standardIt's basically just a text file, so in particular situations one can search or modify with any text editorAutomatically integrated with Emacs & AUCTeX when writing TeX files (in Emacs of course :) )Of course it's a purely subjective choice, I'm not saying it's objectively better than any other. But worth considering and trying!

@worldsendless you can also play music in #emacs?! Didn't know that! Not surprised though... Thank you, I'll explore how that's done!

@aks @fedops @debacle @simon_brookeI personally don't understand modern "software ergonomics". Some of its principles seem to be "you must have dozens of versions of the same software installed' (eg #python), and "when you distribute a piece of software, also distribute the OS (or almost) it runs on". Go figure. I imagine any kind of software practice is the "right" practice in one historical period or another...

Any fans of both #Emacs and #OnePunchMan out there? It'd be wonderful if there was a "onepunchman-mode" of some sort, maybe similar to the nyan-mode https://github.com/TeMPOraL/nyan-mode... 🤩

@louis I've always used my laptop screen only, also for portability – I can suspend and then continue anywhere else. Obviously I imagine this depend on the kind of work you do. On a laptop-screen-only setup, something useful for me is to have multiple virtual desktops, with some convenient keyboard macro to switch among them. I think most window managers have such a functionality.

@avehtari I hope someone will eventually write a paper explaining rigorously how/if #crossvalidation can be derived from the five or six fundamental rules of #probabilitytheory and #decisiontheory and what exactly its meaning is, or what it is an approximation of – and in that case what are the error bounds of such approximation. The literature about it (e.g. Bernardo & Smith) is at most hand-waving. – Maybe Aki & collaborators will tackle this question in a rigorous way in the future? 🚀

@susie Arakawa under the bridge is in my opinion very child-like, or I'd even say "Zen". Completely crazy, I interpret it as being about the wonders in everyday life. Maybe what you're looking for, maybe not.https://myanimelist.net/anime/7647/Arakawa_Under_the_Bridge#anime #arakawa
