The Open Directory Project, or DMOZ, was a massive directory of websites, sorted into categories, with human curators managing individual categories and responding to submissions. As the web is filled more and more with ads, scraped pages, and LLM garbage, I can't help but wonder if maybe the way forward is to look back on projects like thathttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMOZ

Obviously the web is too sprawling to sift through categories to find pages, but surely there are elements of that idea which we can bring forward to this new web of garbage and bullshit the tech giants are creating

webrings are another idea that I think really deserves a new look in this modern era. personal homepages with links pages too. We have to create ways to find our way around the web without the assistance of ad companies.
