It's perfectly reasonable to buy a $25 thermostat and then spend hours figuring out how to bodge an ESP onto it rather than buying a $150 "smart" thermostat that's going to demand cloud access, right?

@mjg59 This is probably the correct answer.I ended up going with a Sensi since the UI design was good and the policies were decent. Still cloud, though.

@mjg59 Considering that the seller is likely to lose interest, fail, or be bought out in a couple of years and turn your smart device into a brick, sure. We have a thermostat with a programmable timer and no net access, and I don't see the need for anything else.

@mjg59 I'm about 90% sure that an ecobee thermostat will work with homekit without registering it, should you want to go with the less bodgeful approach.Disclaimer: I work there, but not much on thermostats

@mjg59 Ecobee allows local access via HomeKit. You don't actually need any Apple devices to use its HomeKit integration; Home Assistant implements the HomeKit protocol and can natively communicate with HomeKit devices.

@mjg59 @rglenn I was gonna say, if you're buying the ESP anyway, just make your own, but this makes it a bit trickier, might still be possible with the right type of relay?North American here, so don't know enough about that type of setup to know.

@mjg59 if it's controlling mains voltage or burning gas I'd be very wary of that. Personally I prefer certified equipment that has a known good failure state that can be driven by something else in a verified way. I don't think a modification like that would even be legal in the UK. But I agreed that "no cloud" is a must

@mjg59 yes, but just don't buy the dumb thermostat up front. Your hearing/cooling system probably just has dry contacts (that's the only output from a generic smart thermostat)... so go directly to the microcontroller of your choice.
