@Flick > U.S. farmers, ranchers, and producers of every kind are growing older. The average age of farm producers (PDF, 1.8 MB) increased from 56.3 to 57.5 years from 2012 to 2017.

Extremely worrying. At least here in rural areas youth introduction to agricultural activity workshops are being promoted. That's one method to working towards a solution

@Morghur They seem to have woken up to the issue in the last five or ten years, but the proposed solutions aren’t happening fast enough. And there are still regular stories on Farming Today about council-owned farms being sold off.

That is honestly horrifying. I would rather see the farm be untended than selling it off to what is potentially an industrial farming company that will do more harm than good. That is why it is extremely important to keep the countryside alive and supporting your community.Kind of a reason i wanna get on the sweet side of my aunt, so she doesn't sell the farm when the time comes.

@Morghur industrial farming companyMore like large-scale property developer. It’s very worrying. How are young farmers supposed to get a start? You can’t keep dividing the income from one family farm between more and more households forever.

@Flick @Morghur This is what the Amish face with their uncontrolled breeding. And why they have to spread all over the countryside.

@susansiens @Morghur While the Amish could do with some updates to their societal structures and draft animal husbandry, I see little problem with their farming practices.

@Flick Similar in the U.S. The crises of skilled agricultural labor shortage and climate/soil disasters are going to make eating pretty rare.

@Flick @Morghur Their farming practices are better than the USDA practices, but I also know that our local Amish engage in sharp practices so I don't fully trust them. They don't need updates, they need an entire social upheaval. What a miserable life for women and often for children as well.
