       In the USA that is generally regarded as more capitalist than Canada, the government (via FRA Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program  has just released  $1.4 billion to help railroads improve their tracks. Virginia gets a flyover for commityer trains/Amtrak to avoid freight delays (DC area).

       Meanwhile in Canada,  with the government having decided to do photo ops for "HFR" whose goal is to replace VIA with lobbyist-driven PPP project, the government has used that non-advancing project to justify not helping VIA in any way while VIA is actively cannibalizing its fleet and unable to restore services cut ducing COVID, a clever way for the government to make VIA cuts without being seen as doing so. In the pasat, the govt had paid for upgrades to tracks/stations.
