Even in this modern age of science and technology, we still don't have concrete as good as what the ancient Romans used

@blitzed nah it's because we never did proper materials analysis until recently, we just took their old descriptions at their word and tried our own thing based on itI was reading an article this morning about why Roman, Mayan, and Harappan construction materials have remained durable over thousands of years versus Portland concrete barely lasting 50

@GreenZeta @coldacid wouldn't you expect technology to move forward in all areas, medicine, infrastructure, etc?

@coldacid Are you talking about the self-healing materials that auto-repair damage?

@coldacid @pjbrunet Researchers say the presence of mineral deposits known as “lime clasts” could explain why these ancient structures remain standing.lime clasts retained by the hot mixing technique allowed for a process of “self-healing” by holding reactive calcium within their matrix. The presence of lime clasts has long been known, but it was frequently attributed to low-quality materials or poor mixing practices.https://hyperallergic.com/802267/roman-concrete-had-self-healing-properties-study-finds/

@thoughtcriminal @coldacid technology doesn't always move forward in a linear fashion. Technologies are lost all the time. The engineers who who worked on the Apollo program brute forced their way through it with trial and error. They were moving so fast that they didn't document much. When they died, the tech died with them. Modern engineers are still reinventing what they did just 60 years ago.

@GreenZeta @coldacid that doesn't seem right to me, from what I've read about the Apollo program. After Apollo I, they had a lot more double checking of everything. Sure, unexpected things still went wrong (Apollo XIII comes to mind) but I'd think that level of detail would spill over into documenting everything.I think there has to something they aren't tell is us about why that tech is lost.

@thoughtcriminal @coldacid That's not how government employees operate. Being the only person who knows how to do something is job security.
