@MartinDeLaToot I had a moderately successful podcast just using my phone, and sometimes used a portable Sony recorder. Modern phones have excellent noise canceling. I wouldn't get stuck on sound quality until you're sure the content is something people want. I guarantee you people would listen to No Agenda if it was just a Zoom call with webcam mics.Podcasts usually fail because of the content, or the podcaster is annoying. Unlikely you're gaining/losing a listener bc of your mic setup.

@MartinDeLaToot Audacity is free. Laptops have surprisingly good mics too -- especially w/ noise canceling software, like you can get with OBS.

@MartinDeLaToot That's what the kids use to stream their games and crap on YouTube, Twitch, etc. Interface looks confusing, but it's good software -- lots of tutorials on how to use it, and it works with Linux, you can plug in cameras, mics, videos, screencasts, photos, it does everything.

@FortyTwo I'm laughing and crying for you. Can't stand Tori Amos. Finding music compatibility is almost impossible though. Years ago LastFM had a "music neighborhood" where you could see who else listened to the same music w/ stats -- mine was mostly 30 y/o German dudes, but there was one woman. I started taking to her and we had some things in common, but it never went anywhere romantically :-(

@jessecoynelson I'm guessing it's annoying to a large percentage of people -- but who knows?"You know" is partly tied to one's relationship to the listener. If it's information I think you should be familiar with, then maybe I'll say it -- you know? I think a good strategy is to set the dynamic up front and get clear about what I know vs. what they know before talking, and then the language takes care of itself. Is it just a bad habit, or is there something deeper behind it.

I survived #crownheights without getting stabbed, but realized pretty fast NYC was a shithole and moved back to Florida. My best friend tricked me into moving there -- he said we had a free place to stay bc his grandmother died. I drive his ass from Florida to Brooklyn. We're only there a few days and his mom calls and says they're selling the brownstone -- and by the way, they want me to help clean it! Full of cobwebs like Miss Havishham lived there.
