I'm curious how many of you actually use a screensaver (not a lock screen) on #Linux, the screensaver fans are very loud about them but surely there isn't that many of them #Wayland #Xorg #Opensource

@BrodieOnLinux I prefer not having my screen burn 24/7, so I much prefer just having it sleep instead. Plus, it's been ages since I saw screensavers come as a default on a system. For as long as I've been using Linux as a secondary (and now primary) mainstay, it's been something you've had to install separately, at least on Gnome-based systems.

@BrodieOnLinux it's definitely novelty software for anyone who isn't using CRTs or OLED monitors without burn-in prevention firmware, but what kind of square would want to use a computer without novelty features?

@BrodieOnLinux gltext from xscreensaver is great. It's a big floating clock.

@BrodieOnLinux I use Wayland and a screensaver would be about as useful as a custom ringtone.

@BrodieOnLinux Burn-in can happen, but with LCDs I'm more worried about a blue-shift of the backlight LEDs. This problem seems to be eradicated with newer screens but any cheap LCD you could get 4-5 years ago would eventually turn blue if it had a lot of operating hours. So, just having the screen turn off is the better option IMO. Saves energy too.

@BrodieOnLinux I have to admit that I don't use a screen saver on Linux (or any other OS) despite having been a big fan of them in the past.

@BrodieOnLinux Honestly, when I was 10 years old, things like windows flying on screen seemed fun. But now? I’d rather have screen just turned off than to waste electricity by having some, largely now pointless, animation rendered.

@BrodieOnLinux Not using one on gnome just an automatic suspend after extended period idle.I did spend a couple of years on LXQT and there my preferred screensaver was fade to black with power settings for sending monitor to sleep a short time later and screen locking only activating at that point.

@BrodieOnLinux I still use them. Currently it's the GLMatrix xscreensaver.

@BrodieOnLinux the grassgames #screensaver looks so nice. it's for windows but i run it on my raspberry using #wine :blobcatgiggle:so if #wayland broke your screensavers, i'm sure you could still use those for microsoft 🤣

@BrodieOnLinux no screensaver, just turn monitors off after a while.

@BrodieOnLinux No screensaver, or lock or suspend.Just screen blanks after 15 minutes inactivity.(In an office it would be blank and lock)

@BrodieOnLinux Screensavers just waste power/monitor's life with no advantages, imo it's just better to use DPMS to turn them off (and I think this might have been the default config for me)Do we even need screensavers for non-CRT non-OLED monitors?
