       Kelena Foly by Cheick Tidiane Seck. I discovered Cheick Tidiane Seck by chance last year when I bought Timbuktu purely on the basis of the album cover (drawn by Brüno, one of my favourite graphic artists) and I was impressed by his chops and his ability to blend African motifs seemlessly with jazz markers. So when I saw Kelena Foly, despite a small apprehension due to the fact that it was a solo piano album (always an arduous proposition), I purchased it. And I'm not getting it. Or rather, I don't think it works. Cheick Tidiane Seck plays a very simple music, with very limited harmonic or rhythmic variations, with no singing and only a few declamations throughout. It's just too dry to appeal to my ears. It could very well be that I completely missed what I should have perceived, but I'm not getting it. #music #jazz #africa #mandingue
