Reminder that FEMA is doing an emergency alert test on all TVs, radios, and cell phones on October 4, 2023, at approximately 2:20pm Eastern Time.If you live in the US and have a phone you need to keep secret for any reason, make sure it is turned off during this time, and *Do Not Turn It On Again Until You Are Alone And Safe* because the alert will come through as soon as that phone is powered on. Repeat: FEMA alert, October 4th, turn off in advance any phones you don’t want making noise. And remember that the Alert Will Come Through As Soon As The Relevant Phone Is Powered Back On.

@Wolven I would add to this and say not to turn the phone back on until you are 100% alone. Some phones or some carriers will have the phone go off again once it's back on. This has at least been a problem reported from some on the Internet.

@Wolven Thanks. I had no idea. Not an issue for me, but nice to know it's a test alert regardless. Link for anyone who might want to read it: https://www.fema.gov/press-release/20230803/fema-and-fcc-plan-nationwide-emergency-alert-test-oct-4-2023

Muting this now as it's destroying my mentions.

@Wolven FEMA uses SMS? Why not Cell Broadcast?I pity the poor SMSCs that have to cope with *that* load spike.

@Wolven Is this new in the US? We’ve had emergency alerts in Canada for several years already. They’re super annoying. Especially if you’re in public and everyone’s phone goes off at the same time.
