What do you think of the way "quote" is used in the following sentence? Is it acceptable in formal Standard English? He began the chapter with a quote from Carl Sagan.I'm not asking if you'd use it yourself. I'm asking if you would tell someone it's wrong if you had been asked to review a document. If you were an editor, would you change it in a press release you were editing, for example.

@grammargirl Roughly one thousand years ago, my AP English teacher said that we often say quote when we mean quotation. I don't know if that's right or wrong but I think about it a lot.

@grammargirl Every chapter in every book should start with a quote by Sagan.

@grammargirl I wouldn't call it wrong, but I'd probably change to something like "...started the chapter by quoting Carl Sagan."

@grammargirl Dictionaries seem happy to state that quote is a synonym for the noun quotation, and the OED suggests it’s a very established usage. Certainly phrases like “quote of the day” have been used as long as I can remember.

@grammargirl Depends on the intended audience... some do better with grammatical correctness, others need a more conversational tone.

@grammargirl Well, I was taught that “quote” was a verb, and the correct noun form is “quotation.” But I think “quote” as a noun — like only one space after a period at the end of a sentence — is just one of those accepted evolved usages.

@grammargirl I voted “Fine” before I looked it up on the basis of the verb being nouned in recent years. Then I found it had been nouned over a hundred years ago.

@grammargirl This is one of the places I can’t let go of my inner prescriptivist. “Quote” is a verb.

@grammargirl All of these polls make me think I likely annoy people who majored in English 😂

@grammargirl I'm guessing the distinction is about using "quote" instead of "quotation", but I think that ship has sailed in modern vocabulary.

@grammargirl This usage has been around for decades. Plus the logic doesn’t make me cringe — unlike the use of literally to mean figuratively.

@grammargirlWell, obviously, it should be the gerund "quoting." None of that hoity-toity "-ation" nonsense, thank you very much.

@grammargirl @ccount I know AHD says over a hundred years, but the OED traces it back five hundred years.

@grammargirl A little informal vs “quotation” but fine is a good way to describe its use (at least in my classroom for many years).

@ai6yr @grammargirl If they majored in order to *understand* English, they won’t be annoyed. If they majored to “learn what is right/correct” and impose it on others, then they *need* someone to annoy them. 😄

@NateBarham @grammargirl LOL. I have run across a few people who regularly send me little notes about my "improper" use of grammar, or more often, honest typos. (thank goodness this service allows for editing... improves my posts significantly, ha ha).

@ai6yr @NateBarham I would *never* send anyone a note about perceived improper grammar in a post or even a typo.I appreciate it when people tell me about typos, but that's different. Nobody should do that to a regular person.

@grammargirl I know I've used the word in exactly that way, but technically wouldn't it be “quotation" in the same sense that I don't like the phrase, "Send me an invite” when it should be "Send me an invitation.”

@leebennett Yes, that's the "technically," and what you'll find in usage guides, but "quote" has been used this way for a long time.
