I feel like I am fighting Linux, and I'm not in the mood to fight my computer. If there was a current hackintosh I could easily use, today, I'd switch to MacOS at the moment.I'll be damned if I go back to Windows... That's not happening. But with that said, I'm not in the mood to fight with my computer, today.#Linux #MacOS #Windows #Hackintosh

@fbievan I decided to give both openSUSE, Fedora, and OpenMandriva a try. It has been a while since I used an RPM distro as my daily. It's not going so well.

@fbievan Lack of software support, for one.For example, I wanted to get Surf Shark VPN to work. That was a bust.

@fbievan@social.linux.pizza @Linux_Is_Best@mastodon.social Because #Flatpak is shit. But then again, so are for-profit VPNs, so it would match their business "case" great to use some insecure garbage to spread their malware...

@tyil @fbievan For-profit VPNs are not malware, and they do offer better solutions than making your own.For example, I want to be able to change locations at a whim (moment's notice) from various parts of the world, without purchasing a new IP every time I wish to do so.

@Linux_Is_Best@mastodon.social @fbievan@social.linux.pizza If you don't have any care for privacy or security, and no technical skills to already be running a VPN anyway, I guess you can make a case for them. For anyone who doesn't isn't convinced by a marketing team's flashy ads (or just having a ton of streamers repeat it for profit), there's no real value from it. Sharing all your data with a for-profit company, in a business that shows time and time again that all their "privacy" bullshit is just a load of horseshit seems ridiculously short-sighted and dumb.Learn from the past, just set up your own VPN. Its probably not even needed to use one in your case if you could just stop relying on other, even worse, proprietary software.

@tyil @fbievan 🙄 Having the technical skills does not mean, wanting to lose the convenience or affordability. My needs are less about privacy and more about changing streaming services. The only "privacy" is perhaps hiding from the site I visit and maybe my ISP.

@Linux_Is_Best@mastodon.social @fbievan@social.linux.pizza changing streaming servicesAh, the shitty proprietary software in question.Yes, if you've accepted harmful software as your god, I can imagine you will want to use as much of it as possible. Have you considered getting two for-profit VPN services? My needs are less about privacyI am sadly aware that the majority of people have been successfully subverted by greed to think that privacy is not something desirable. I guess nobody can save you anymore.

@Linux_Is_Best@mastodon.social @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @fbievan@social.linux.pizza interestingly, people seem to have completely forgotten about proxies, which is the service these companies are offering, there's very little private networking going on I assume. Which makes me wonder why people would need a new IP in the first place, if your opsec includes not exposing your IP address, I would assume giving so much data to a private company is also a risky endeavour.

@tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @fbievan@social.linux.pizza oh. in that case you could probably just extract the VPN data yourself? It's probably either wireguard or OpenVPN config, which you can just use using the regular clients/networkmanager

@dwarf@borg.social @fbievan@social.linux.pizza Likely, but I'm not here to play tech support to a guy who clearly cares not for free software, and who does his best to undermine any security and privacy concepts for the wider world. If he wants support, he could just ask the people he's literally paying for sub-par software solutions. I'm here to mock someone for being very dumb.

@tyil @dwarf VPN's really are only good at pretending you're somewhere you're not (that's why I rent a server that basically serves as a proxy for my real server)

@fbievan@social.linux.pizza @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl couldn't you do the same thing with a regular HTTP proxy without paying? There's whole memes about the ads "oh, I see you live in <anonymous proxy> too" on sketchy websites

@fbievan@social.linux.pizza @dwarf@borg.social As Dwarf said, that's actually (reverse) proxies doing that. VPNs are for making a network with other systems without them being in a physical network together. You can access a proxy over a VPN, which is what most for-profit "VPNs" do.The most common reason for desiring such a proxy service is to access content which proprietary services are trying to regulate for the sake of higher profits.

@tyil @dwarf yeahI really only use it in terms of my wireguard setup in which it proxies stuff into the VPN and gets spat out. It's to late for me to be thinking about this

@fbievan@social.linux.pizza @dwarf@borg.social I really should look into replacing #tinc with a #WireGuard mesh VPN setup at some point. I've been told it should perform much better, but I've not yet found (or really looked) into making WireGuard a simple mesh network, in a way that I could completely automate using #Bashtard.
