I feel like I am fighting Linux, and I'm not in the mood to fight my computer. If there was a current hackintosh I could easily use, today, I'd switch to MacOS at the moment.I'll be damned if I go back to Windows... That's not happening. But with that said, I'm not in the mood to fight with my computer, today.#Linux #MacOS #Windows #Hackintosh

@fbievan I decided to give both openSUSE, Fedora, and OpenMandriva a try. It has been a while since I used an RPM distro as my daily. It's not going so well.

@fbievan Lack of software support, for one.For example, I wanted to get Surf Shark VPN to work. That was a bust.

@tyil @fbievan For-profit VPNs are not malware, and they do offer better solutions than making your own.For example, I want to be able to change locations at a whim (moment's notice) from various parts of the world, without purchasing a new IP every time I wish to do so.

@tyil @fbievan 🙄 Having the technical skills does not mean, wanting to lose the convenience or affordability. My needs are less about privacy and more about changing streaming services. The only "privacy" is perhaps hiding from the site I visit and maybe my ISP.

Microsoft, quietly, has published a guide on how to download and install Linux.No... Seriously... It is not a joke...https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/linux/installThe article was published September 29, 2023 (9 days ago). The guide provides every option available, too. Starting with using their Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), to using a Virtual Machine, and even on "Bare Metal" alongside Windows. That's right, Microsoft now tells you how to dual-boot Linux. 🤯 #Microsoft #Windows #Linux #Ubuntu #Debian

Microsoft 365 (Office 365) works on Linux. But not just Linux... I am using Mozilla Firefox, too. No more notice instructing me to use Microsoft Edge browser. 🤯 If, you're one of those few people who "must" have Microsoft Edge, I have good news. Microsoft Edge is also available on Linux. 😉 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/download?form=MA13FJ #Microsoft #Microsoft365 #MicrosoftOffice #Office365 #Linux #Windows #Firefox

Ubuntu 23.10 had been released via most of the repos. There is no ISO, yet. But a command line update worked. The repos are likely still being populated at this time. If you are told there is no release yet, try later.#Ubuntu #Linux

@Deus As previously said, there is no ISO yet.You can perform a command line update if you're using a previous version. The ISO will be released in a few hours (October 12, 2023).

@Deus Linux is a complete different operating system from Windows. You don't perform an in-place upgrade from Windows to Linux, you perform a fresh install, replacing Windows. So you want to back up your documents, photos, videos, and anything important if you're going to make the switch. The ISO can boot from USB and you can try it from the USB without installing or touching Windows. The actual install, is point and click easy, just like Windows.

@Deus To answer your other question, if you're new to Linux, coming from Windows, I would suggest you back up (obviously) and wait a day or two after the release.Ubuntu and its many flavors (see URL) is great for newbies. But just like Windows or macOS, on release day, there may be a few minor bugs. Wait until those are fixed (if any are needed). It's a great distro to use if you're a newbie and comes in a few flavors https://ubuntu.com/desktop/flavours

@Deus That is never going to happen with no operating system. Not even Microsoft Windows can do that, nor can Apple macOS.Sadly, the only exception are mobile phones. There are import tools for porting from Apple iOS to Android and Android to iOS. But no one has ever made a tool for the desktop (sorry) and no one seems to have any plans either. That said, backing up your documents, photos, videos, and alike is as simple as copying them to a free USB or uploading them online.

@Deus Linux is indeed the future. Even Microsoft, themselves, now provide a guide on how to switch to Linux.https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/linux/installThe theory is either Windows 12 or 13 will be Linux based. Or Windows as an online service becomes more of a thing (they're already doing that now).

@Deus The only reason phones can do it is that cellular providers demanded those things, way in the beginning, and eventually they just "stuck" as a standard thing. But if you moved from MacOS to Windows or Windows to MacOS or Linux, etc... There is no direct path. There never will be.The correct answer is and always will be backup, and install.

The screenshot shows that mastodon dot social incorrectly reports that the account on mstdn dot social has no follower, no posts, and no avatar. The reality is 2 people follow the other account (myself included), it has 5 posts, and it has an avatar. This is the issue I am noticing on Mastodon as of late. #Mastodon #Fediverse

I don't as yet, have plans to leave Mastodon dot socialI did this as a test to see how the Fediverse is currently working, and to verify if what I have been seeing was indeed happening or not.At the moment, not everything seems to be correctly populating.

@stux Who decides if something is "known" ?
