       Well, honestly. Our occupiers seem intent on adopting the Progress flag as their new symbol. A move I kind of approve. It will make them more easily to identify.

       Simplest way explaining to olds is telling them“I used to be patriotic growing up but your school systems and culture just kept hammering in the idea that america isn’t a “nation”, it’s an “idea”, and that idea is basically an international strip mall. Hard to care about that.” Usually works okay, because you can focus on the fact that their high-minded ideal america is long dead.

       I get the impression that USA kitsch is still our symbol, it's like flying the flag of the old regime. Some differences here in that we were never actually conquered, so government buildings still sometimes fly it too, but you implicitly know which side someone's on 90 percent of the time by which flag they've got up.

       In my circle it’s definitely lost a LOT of the allure. guys who installed a flagpole on their property end up flying random crap instead of the flag itself, their fealty is just too betrayed to look at it the same way they used to. One just changed it out for a pirate flag, told me the flag fills him with a strange, incomprehensible feeling a bit like bragging about how easy of a ‘mark’ he is.        Interesting. Natural pivot for boomers who are unhappy with the direction of things is a POW-MIA flag, where I am. Makes sense - they lived through the betrayal of 'Nam vets, and now feel the same way.
