I just wanna clear up a few things, then I'm done talking about this, because I'm exhausted. The reason TheBadSpace has been talked about so much lately is because it was listed by the Federation Safety Enhancement Project as the one and only blocklist they would initially use. This gave it outsized influence, and with it, outsized scrutiny of the list and its maintainers. Many of us have long had concerns about both blocklists and heavy-handed server-level moderation (which often employs or fuels blocklists). We don't have "problems with consent" but rather problems with what we see as a long history of lists being used beyond their stated purpose, to silence groups the maintainers don't like or who have actively disagreed with them. Even finding out you're on these lists is hard, and getting off of them can be even harder. Given their heavy use by both individuals and servers, they merit criticism, not because of their maintainers but on their very premise.

I have not in the last weeks, nor would I, direct any harassment toward anyone involved in either moderating servers or building blocklists. I don't want them to be faced with abuse or bigotry or DDoS attacks or anything of the sort.I also don't accept any narrative that my criticism was rooted in racism or bigotry, or that it perpetuated such. Disagreements and criticism are not harassment, they're necessary and healthy parts of how we define our shared principles as a community. We as people are passionate about what we believe the best course of action is for the Fediverse, and just as I'd ask folks to not fault that passion in me, I don't fault that passion in others. The folks I disagree with aren't "bad" people. I may believe they are taken too seriously or enjoy wider support than their actions seem to justify, and no doubt they think the same of me, but I refuse to stoop to the level of disowning my ideological allies as human beings on such petty grounds.

It has been very bad for my overall well-being to be as wrapped up in this whole thing as I have been these last few weeks.I take responsibility for the fact that nobody made me go read through every toot of the people I disagreed with. I did that myself, and it just kept making me angrier and angrier.I am exhausted of the debates, of the DMs, of the thinly veiled warnings to say no more, of the entire servers losing contact with each other.I stand firmly by my principles, and they've been around for far, far longer than this specific debate. Those of you who know me well know that I am nothing if not a firm defender of those principles. But there's really nothing more to say on this subject.I have a lot of better things I could be thinking and talking about. I have a lot of personal struggles I should be directing my full attention to. I have a lot of friends that I'd rather talk about anything in the world but this with. Thanks for sticking with me. đź’™

@silvereagle I honestly think all the major blocklist creators have proven themselves to be irresponsible and sometimes outright malicious. All of the major blocklist creators I've spoken to are extremely hostile and always start off on the offensive when you ask for clarification as to why you're on a blocklist. They spin the truth and fabricate outright lies in order to justify themselves, and they have no interest in really correcting their mistakes. Not to mention the thinly veiled queerphobia under the guise of "protecting people" when it comes to even mild kink content. It's sad to say but I think the possibility of one globally federated network is dead. Servers have more or less created their own communities and bubbles in the face of rampant defederation by bad actors. Part of me is kind of happy to have internet communities back again but I also can't help but feel sad about how bad of a missed opportunity federation on a large scale really was.I think it's really cool that you stood by your principles throughout all this. I didn't engage much cuz I kind of had enough of these types of people on Twitter and the ship has sailed for us over here on fighting against defederation. It used to upset me, especially the outright lies and vitriol sent our way, but it just kind of is what it is.

@Taullo @silvereagle It’s sad to say but I think the possibility of one globally federated network is dead.I personally wouldn’t say that. (this whole next part will be assuming this is based on how The Bad Space is treating federation. If this is not the case, please skip my rant xD)I don’t think that because a handful of bad actors making a blocklist are going to kill the Fediverse. Not to say it wouldn’t cause harm to the dynamics - it ABSOLUTELY can harm and has harmed the Fediverse’s dynamics, no question - but the Fediverse hasn’t dropped dead yet. However - there is a way the Fediverse can get hurt in the future. If new instances follow the FSEP’s plans and just automatically add TBS as a source without thinking. Y’know, the List that has one of its trusted sources be very adamant on wanting to be alone than admit being even a little wrong. If new instances trust The Bad Space without prior knowledge of exactly who, what, or even why the instances on it are blocked, (and I am quite sure that will happen, as we were VERY not used to Fedi culture when me and [kkdiagt server owner] were setting up karkatdyinginagluetrap.com) then that means there’s at least a significant number of new instances depending on The Bad Space to do the right thing, which (at least in its’ current state with open applications for “trusted sources” and the “at least two” rule) could very well be Bad in the future.Especially as The Bad Space is centralized and requires negotiation. If your instance is on the blocklist, you have to contact Ro (probably through a different instance, or through email maybe?), get him to agree with your reasoning, and then hope the instances will be convinced enough to get you off of the list. That is quite a lot of roadblocks for an appeal! (Maybe they could add an internal appeal form. That would be good, I guess.)(Ok, that’s all. It is currently late night and I am tired, so llfjggbfh at me if something’s a bit strange innit)

@meowcatheorange @silvereagle who the fuck wants a single connected network anywaycompartmentalization is the way, a single centralized network is for normie twittoid brainlets.
