Noticed a new logo on a Patreon e-mail...is that rebrand something they just rolled out today?Their new homepage runs at about 2fps and completely ignores my scrollwheel and the logo looks like an ocarina from zeldaGreat work, marketing consultancy!

Gotta admit I appreciate the brutal honesty that on a MS page ranking Windows dev frameworks, it sure looks like, on the balance of it all, the best option for developing on Windows is React Native, the thing made by Meta that has the very least to do with .net and the Windows ecosystem

LB: Google really did kill off Pixel Pass, a new-phone-every-two-years plan, after exactly 22 months a month shy of the Pixel 8 release, giving people who subscribed to it a $100 credit, automatically renewing all the stuff in the pass to the various monthly (more expensive) versions, and despite paying for months, nobody's getting a new phone. It's an exceptionally dirty rug-pull on Google's part. It may not be lawsuit-worthy, but damn if it isn't just one more log on the absolute bonfire of reasons not to trust that company with anything.

@corpubro Well, you're listed on "The Bad Space" blocklist as antisemitic, racist, homophobic: https://tweaking.thebad.space/location/7be6f93e-dc0d-4655-bb6b-fde9975fb234

Fun fact: Tyson-Tan, the awesome artist who is known for supporting free and open-source software and creating artwork of KDE's Konqi and Krita's Kiki, also made the mascot for my software, AzuraCast. He noticed that the project had its roots in the pony fandom, so he made the mascot, Azura, a musical unicorn with a total chill vibe who uses her horn to hold her microphone when she's streaming. I love her, and she still features in our public pages, like our login screen.

Let me break this down for you fundamentally:One of tech.lgbt's mods made a post telling people to be cautious of TheBadSpace after it wrongly caught tens of thousands of LGBTQ+ people in its blocklist. The masto.art admin asserts, absent ANY proof, that this mod both knew that a black man was running the blocklist AND intended to stir up a flurry of racist abuse against this man. This has led her and others to lash out against the whole instance, saying unbelievable things like they're "as bad as KiwiFarms", and defederating from them completely. The tech.lgbt admins dug into this, produced a huge write-up explaining every step of what happened, and in the end concluded that no, their mod's post was not the catalyst behind everyone getting upset about TheBadSpace, nor did their mod realize what a fucking minefield they had stepped into. The masto.art curator looked at this long post, rejected it outright, and just called them racist some more.

Masto.art's "curator", WelshPixie, is now flying off the handle yet again, feeling even more justified in severing connections with this entire server. Why? It's simple: she's only ever done this kind of tactic against smaller instances that are largely progressive/leftist, and historically, because she's in charge of such a large instance relative to them, they've been understandably hurt and have bent over backwards to placate her. (Notably, she doesn't enforce these same standards against larger instances than hers, like .social, because there's too much money in it.)This time, though, the instance bent over backwards for her, and it only made her angrier. She didn't want understanding or reconciliation, she wanted to force another instance to fire its staffers and was willing to use her whole instance as a cudgel to carry that out.So now, folks are done with her shit, and I am VERY here for it.

If you're on Mastodon.art or tech.lgbt, one day this week you're going to wake up and you may well find yourself missing dozens upon dozens of people off your feed. This is not because those people are bad people, or even because the instances they're on are bad instances with a long history of abuse. Neither instance is full of bad people, nor are they abusive in any material way. This is because one person controlling one huge instance got red-hot with anger over a single situation and kept escalating it, using her platform and position to amplify her own anger. She long ago gave up trying to de-escalate, and now every post she sees just makes her angrier, but because of the way Mastodon works, she is single-handedly capable of severing countless thousands of interpersonal connections. For my money, if this makes you fucking angry then it damn well should, but NOT at tech.lgbt. We're lucky they're even keeping the damn server running after all this.

I've been following this really closely, so let me spell out some assertions I hold to be true here.NO, the post by the .lgbt mod was neither the first nor the most popular post calling out TheBadSpace. NO, the criticisms of the list were not rooted in, or in any way informed by, the race of the maintainer (Ro).YES, shitty people capitalized on the drama to harass Ro, but NO person on .lgbt's staff condoned, encouraged, prompted, or supported this at any point.NO, .lgbt is not "as bad as KiwiFarms"; such a comparison is abhorrent, given the very real lives destroyed by KF. Nobody who makes a claim like this should be taken seriously.NO, folks are not "spreading lies" when suggesting that Ro's fediblock posts influence the contents of his own blocklist. Many of his "trusted" sources follow him closely and block on his command, and he revels in the indirect authority this gives him and the pain this causes anyone critical of him.

There is NO evidence whatsoever that supports an accusation that tech.lgbt's leadership was in any way involved in a harassment campaign against Ro or TheBadSpace. Further, there is NO reason to suspect that the instance is an unsafe one for any marginalized group.Even if there was an interpersonal conflict between one instance's mod and the staff of another, is there any good reason whatsoever to sever tens of thousands of connections as punishment for that? FUCK NO.Is there evidence that .art only holds smaller, more vulnerable instances to this standard while excusing far worse things from larger instances, on account of the revenue the larger instances represent? YES, in WelshPixie's own words. What is happening is, to put it bluntly, a fucking travesty. It's a slap in the face to solidarity, to community, to the resilience of the Fediverse at large, and a warning sign to countless many to stay away.

It's shit like this, Windows...In the Explorer UI, if you wanted to move something "up" a directory into a parent one, you could just literally click and drag it to the parent directory in the file listing. In the newest reworked Explorer, not only have they pulled this feature, but they went through the effort of showing a "Can't do this" cursor when trying to do it.This was an immense time-saver for a lot of little things I do, and they could've left well enough alone, but they went through the effort to not only remove it as a feature but to really drive home that it's missing. That's pretty fucked.

I think, if I've learned nothing else through all these latest defederation disasters, it's that people like me really shouldn't be in charge of instances.Instances don't do well with loud, principle-driven and strongly opinionated people at the helm. It's not fair, but their statements and actions get held against their whole server, and everyone who's just there looking for a place to peacefully exist often has to pick up the pieces any time some polarizing thing is said or done.Perhaps the ideal Mastodon server administrators are the quiet teams of nameless moderators who exercise heavy restraint in making big decisions, who never comment on accusations or claims about them except when strictly necessary, and who do all their work of protecting their users subtly behind the scenes.Of course, the problem is, these aren't the people who are often drawn to run instances. 😔

Reading through this thread and it certainly looks like someone either just got shitcanned from Tusky, or is about to be, for having leveled some very justified (and honestly, very benign) criticism of TheBadSpace blocklist.I get flak for saying it, but there really is an ideological "cult" surrounding this project and the folks immediately running and supporting it. Any criticism of it, valid as it may be, is seen as bigotry, and since anything labeled "bigoted" is (often rightfully, but in this case, far too zealously) exterminate-on-sight in the Mastodon universe, it's far too easy to just designate the next target arbitrarily.Folks are uninstalling apps, defederating from each other, ripping thousands of connections apart, calling each other heinous horrible things, all because we have differing opinions about how best to keep the Fediverse a safe and inclusive place.I really think this is all getting out of hand.

The responses definitely seem to spell out an ultimatum that some people refuse to work with anyone who criticizes the BadSpace blocklist: :ew: thanks for letting us know, I’m going to have to say something because I have been helping Ro and that’s how people feel about it then I don’t wanna work with themthank you so much for bringing it up, some of us made our stance clear and we are waiting for the rest to reactI want to drive the point home that the "receipts" here are SO benign: they say "innocent users are going to get caught in the drama" (they are, and have), and they boost someone saying blocklists are in general a case of good intentions poorly executed (they are).None of this is, in any fucking way, racism or bigotry. This is a wholly uncontroversial take. But it disagrees with the cult, so they must go:I can hardly imagine someone from our team not supporting RoThat's fucked, right?

Overnight, as things in Tusky bubbled up to the surface, I got a lot of criticism (and a whole lotta reports) about this post.A lotta folks took issue with my usage of the word "Fired" originally. I've since corrected that, since Tusky is built by volunteers (though they do, as discussed in earlier controversies, have an OpenCollective that pays out to their contributors). I still don't know if there's a better single word for someone losing a position like that, but I corrected it anyway.Folks have also pointed out that one of the folks in this thread also resigned, though in their parting message they still refer to the ongoing discussion as "anti-Blackness" and BIPOC "erasure", when in fact those things were never done by anyone involved in the process at all, especially not publicly.Criticism and skepticism are not racism, and cannot be considered sacrosanct. Full stop.

Even more folks are saying I'm just outright wrong by reading between the lines in this situation and referring to it as someone being "forced out" of the organization. So, let me spell it out for you.Someone makes a thread alerting a bunch of high-ranking folks in Tusky that their community manager has criticized TBS.Their response is one of aghast horror that someone on their team wouldn't support TBS/Ro, claims that they'd never work with someone who was like that, and claims that they'll take care of it internally.Less than a day later, the community manager quits, issuing a stern apology. As an outsider, this one isn't hard for me to follow. Couch it in whatever language you want, but it's quite clear a bunch of people internally issued ultimatums that ultimately forced someone out for what were, in my opinion, entirely benign and justified doubts about the nature of TBS and blocklists at large.

@ConnyDuck I eagerly await Tusky correcting the record on here in a way that isn't just replying to me and telling me I'm "full of shit" or "fucking lying" because it would be awfully handy for us outsiders looking at this situation and piecing it together from what we can see if you gave us more information than just that.

@mcc @ConnyDuck What I'm linking are public posts that paint a pretty obvious picture that's rather hard to draw much of any other conclusion from. Are you sincerely telling me that the following things didn't happen:A thread from someone saying they uninstalled Tusky over the community manager's anti-TBS stance alerted Tusky senior staff of this "problematic" behavior on the community manager's part; Those senior staff said, publicly, that they'd never work with anyone who didn't support Ro and that it was against what the project stands for to do soThey went into the Matrix chat or whatever and said something, at which pointThe community manager quit and apologized profusely.I get that you have a vested personal interest in not getting folks mad at Tusky, and part of that involves getting out and controlling narratives, but just yelling "you're full of shit!" at me is about the worst way to go about it.
