@nickheer I am glad to see by your post on USB-C that you a) linked to my TidBITS article (thank you!) and b) are an old crank like me (I don't know your age). My general advice these days is: buy a Thunderbolt 4/USB4 cable or two. They're not that pricey compared to all the others, if slightly thicker. Then ignore standards. But you'd think by this point, Apple, the USB-IF, and Intel would have sorted out a simpler cable head branding system? There must be some very annoying reason not.

@nickheer I'm about to produce a second edition of Take Control of Untangling Connections to account for Thunderbolt 5, new USB issues, the iPhone 15s, and some other things, plus I bought a testing unit from Austria that's not expensive that lets you see WHAT PINOUTS WORK ON A USB-C CABLE. cc @MikeTRose I ordered the wrong unit first, so I also have a USB Type-A/-C tester. Waiting for the USB-C one.

@glennf @nickheer @MikeTRose I have this one and love it. https://www.tindie.com/products/petl/usb-c-cable-tester-c2c-caberqu/ Sounds like it’s what you ordered.

@glennf @donw @nickheer Yep that’s the one I got –other than accidentally snapping off the battery bracket as I was putting it together, it’s great. (I used a binder clip to hold the battery on.)I went through a bin of cables and ID’ed the high speed few. I was a little surprised that the pricey Rolling Square cable I just bought is low-speed, but I suppose it’s really intended for charging rather than data. https://rollingsquare.com/products/xll

@MikeTRose @glennf @nickheer In my more generous moments I think “well, usb3 requires notably more wires and that’s weight and waste when it’s not what the cable is for” but the lack of any labeling makes it super crappy to deal with. I marked all mine with a label maker but it’s just a matter of time till they get pulled off.

@donw @glennf @nickheer I used black Sharpie on all the low-speed cables — and almost all my black cables are also low-speed so they didn’t need to be flagged. For the high-speed cables I used these Velcro cable flags https://www.amazon.com/Pieces-Labels-Multi-Color-Management-Computers/dp/B094CZD46J/ref=pd_lpo_sccl_1/133-8600914-4055603?pd_rd_w=NzIYN&content-id=amzn1.sym.116f529c-aa4d-4763-b2b6-4d614ec7dc00&pf_rd_p=116f529c-aa4d-4763-b2b6-4d614ec7dc00&pf_rd_r=Q6VY1C6HAND8SFZZT9HF&pd_rd_wg=bCbhX&pd_rd_r=60617795-4a5a-4f7f-8b54-42f3cf19d603&pd_rd_i=B094CZD46J&th=1
