A mate is in hospital, I just messaged him to see if he'd like a visit. I used the exact same phrasing as if he got arrestedReminded me of the Foucault quote: 'Is it surprising that prisons resemble factories, schools, barracks, hospitals, which all resemble prisons?'.

@frew except when the hospital limit your contact with the patients, it's done to benefit the patient and not because they are being punished...and I think institutions all look the same because they are mostly functional buildings.

@arikb With my mate it, I didn't want to ask specifics of his problem, like you don't ask a fellow prisoner what they did to get there, out of respect for his privacy.Foucault analysed how institutions function on it's subjects, tracking the development of prisons, psychology, sexuality etc. over their development. There's power a relation between the medical staff and patients that echoes the relations of guards and prisoners, you are expected to do what you are told for your own good.

@frewMy (admittedly rather small) experience with hospitals was very different. I was advised about what's going on, I was able to affect the course of treatment and I didn't feel like I'm forced to do anything. They had their way of doing things but I could either go along or not at my option. I didn't lose agency.
