Canadian doctors do ballet dance moves in N95 masks to show it's easy to breathe, and breathe *heavily*, in them: https://boingboing.net/2023/09/19/canadian-doctor-dancers-demonstrate-how-easy-it-is-to-breathe-in-an-n95-mask-respirator.htmlI co-sign! Back in the first nasty pre-vaccine summer of 2020, I cycled 100 miles in a day from NYC to Philadelphia, wearing a mask the entire wayIt's actually a wonderful way to protect from gnarly traffic fumes! And yeah, even with my heart rate up high most of the way, no trouble breathing

@clive The trick is to ensure that the mask type you're wearing won't stick to your face once it's soaked in sweat. I tried working out in a climbing gym with one of the "flat" ones and it was suffocating once wet!

@clive Also, bicycling with a mask prevents bugs entering your digestive canals in an unintentional and somewhat unwelcome manner.#truestory

@Piraya YESbugs in the nose, a truly unpleasant side-effect of long-distance cycling

@clive in 2020 I ran a 50k ultra marathon in one and had no issues not during the year of training runs probably amounting to over 1000 miles. Like you said, they made it easier to breath even in dusty and pollen heavy areas

@clive Masks are good at keeping the wind out of my face and even a paper one was more warm than a drippy wool balaclava!

@clive You're more athletic than me, but I can testify that an #FFP2 respirator makes turning over the #compost a lot less unpleasant.

@clive I wear a N95 mask but can I am very clear that it's not actually wonderful and the 100% humidity is 100% awful. And knowing that it's technically giving me enough oxygen doesn't stop my body from gasping for air for whatever reason. I just wear them anyway. Better to acknowledge that it really sucks for some people and encourage people to do it anyway because the alternative is so much worse.

@bike Yeah, fair enough -- they can definitely be unpleasant for some
