who remembers the name of the installation mode for windows which was basically a one-time sandbox? You boot it up, do your business, install whatever then reboot took you back to the base system.

@bufordk I did this on Windows NT 4 in the early 2000s. It was a one off and a big pain in the ass to create. Lots of registry editing. A friend who worked at the GM Tech Center told me that's how his terminal was setup. This was the same time period, early 2000s

@Wy7usa Not the current sandbox but the same concept except that was the installation mode. Any changes that were made in the running session were rolled back to the stock load on reboot

@bufordk You may be referring to Steady State, which was an option in Windows XP. Unfortunately it was not supported in later versions of windows.Back in the day some libraries I worked with were using a third party product called Deep Freeze on Win 7 machines, but not sure if that is still being sold anymore.

@WandringKnight In my memory, it was nothing different that customizing a system for normal installation . You just used this mode. It was pretty slick and effective

@bufordk I was a TechNet subscriber back then. I don't know if that information is still available or free anymore. Microsoft, what was I thinking. 🤪
