@brewsterkahle Group think has the connotation of some people not thinking and just holding to x because the group holds x

@brewsterkahle The usage of group think is pejorative, implying that many people are mindlessly following an accepted beliefCollective intelligence implies a group of people all contributing their unique intelligence to develop a best answer or solution

@steffo Yes, I agree. I have heard the "collective intelligence" term used in distributed deliberation. but I was struck by the similarity of the terms, and wonder if there is something going on-- like my convincing myself of something, and selectively.and thank you, @tychotithonus for the "herd mentality" addition-- exactly.

@rm4 @brewsterkahle Yep - the former is pejorative / "herd mentality", while the latter could simply be crowdsourcing

@tychotithonus @rm4 Nice one, yes, "herd mentality" is the same combo. I hope the distributed evidence gathering and deliberation which I have heard associated with 'collective intelligence' yields better results-- for some definition of "better"

@brewsterkahle 'Divide and conquer' is a ubiquitus meme in Western intellectual-history; Prize individualism and suspect collectivism. So terms for 'working together' might be praise or condemnation. #culture, #propaganda, #norms

@brewsterkahleI don't think so. Group think is a psychological syndrome typified by a relatively small group lazily following a (usually) dominant voice. Collective Intelligence usually refers to a shared perception.Totally my lay opinion, but I can _create_ group think in, say, classrooms.
