Regarding “back to the office”: Why is the commute the employee’s burden anyway? Make it part of the work time and have at it requiring people to come to the office. Three hours commute? You get 5 hours in the office.Employees are available immediately at home but if they’ve required in the office, the clock starts when they leave home. You rent their time, your choice to spend it on travel.

It's interesting how some people's immediate response is: this will make housing and traffic worse, because employers will try to minimise commute time. They do that already, by forcing people to offices, making them optimise for short commutes on their own. There's another way to get to a zero commute, it's not to commute.

Another interesting theme: “People would just choose to commute longer so they have to work less.”Do I have news for you: people who don't want to work will find ways not to work. If presence is your way of checking productivity you're in for a rough time no matter your model.

Until you discover you only get hired if you live minutes from work and have to move constantly on your own expense. Not to mention that cost of everything you buy goes up. Good luck with that

@finestructure @AndrewMurphie especially when you know "those CEOs" are absolutely charging for their travel time in a private jet or helicopter

@tanepiper If you knew anything about the corporate world, you wouldn't compare CEO and staff remunerations. CEOs don't have salaries or working hours. They have bottom lines and responsibility before the Board. It is easy to be critical of Corporatism, but at least be accurate.@finestructure @AndrewMurphie

@niclas CEOs don't have salaries? LOL LOL LOL LOL Large company CEOs make millions in salary, plus tens of millions in stock options, and when they fail, they get millions and millions to leave.

@chrisod Definition of salary...Ok, publicly traded corporations that hire CEOs on "fixed amount" are good "short selling" candidates. Tim Cook is more greedy than Steve Jobs was, collecting $3 million compared to Jobs' $1, but still <10% of the compensation (~$100mil in 2021, ~$50mill in 2022, 50% PAY-CUT).Is that reasonable amounts? No. I don't think so, but the investors do. It is <0.1% of sales, and in a small company, the sales staff get that kind of compensation or more.

@chrisod End of the day; Corporations are an extension of the government, granting the owners "protection" (from liability, competition, ruin) in exchange for "tax collection" (sales tax, income tax, basically every other tax, varies from country to country a bit)."More government" is the wrong medicine against Corporatism. Large corps are the biggest beneficiaries of your tax dollars. Without the protection and subsidies, I doubt corporations could sustain their overheads.

@finestructure Why not 50:50? The companys need the working people and the people need the jobs. We/they need each other in the end.

@finestructure So you want them paid for eight hours, but the vast majority who drive, ride, etc., will only be productive for five hours, and it's not even about the wicked employer wanting to squeeze the last drop of work ethic out of employees for a measly salary. Your coworker who takes the train or bus will be up in arms as they are expected to work on their commute to and from the office and, therefore, will want extra pay.
