In watching the tech media sites fawn over the latest iDevices...I don't get it. I rode the entire wave of smartphones, from hacking early #Windows Mobile phones, through the intro of #iPhone & #Android, up to the present. It was amazing to watch these devices evolve and mature but every single announcement over the last few years has been iterative and boring...and that's perfectly fine, it's a mature industry. But how can you possibly get that excited anymore?Maybe I'm just getting old...

@collectifission I know I'm in the minority, but I'd be much more excited to hear about how the device is repairable, does better at protecting privacy, lasts longer, etc.

@tilvids 100%. Phones have matured into a standard device. They've been boring (in a good way) for the past ~5 years at least.I don't want different. I want cheaper or longer lasting or more repairable or longer security update commitments.

@tilvids @collectifission incorporating more mid-level sensors into the single do everything device is cool, so I do find the 360-capture neat, but otherwise yeah totally agree. I'm disappointed #FairPhone 5 won't come out to the US this year, but the FairPhone 4 is still really cool and available in the US today from Murena. The #Librem5 is also really cool, and better on privacy/freedom, but not as good on sustainability. #LineageOs is probably the better answer for all of us looking for new.

@tilvids I dunno, it's probably just 'content' to them, there are enough iDevice fanpersons out there that you can find someone at every tech blog/channel to breathlessly cover even the most minor thing that probably will get removed in 2 years (does anyone remember 3D Touch?). Happy I won't need to carry around lightning cables in the car for the wife in a couple years though.

@YugiohMaster88 @fosserytech I've been watching them for years. Still would like a device that has a better camera stack, and the software overall still isn't quite mature enough for me as a daily-driver...but yes, very positive about the PinePhone project.

@tilvids @YugiohMaster88 Yeah hardware is still a problem. Some mobile UIs like Plasma Mobile are unusable on it and even PostmarketOS with Phosh freezes sometimes. It's only suitable for simple phone calls, SMS, listening to music and maybe for reading RSS, nothing extra

@YugiohMaster88 @tilvids no matter how good battery is if the Linux kernel sucks at power management 😂

Sadly, even running android on the pinephone is an experience similar to my old galaxy s1. I'm glad we have it to help push the state of the art forward, but we really need a better hardware platform before we can even start to start considering daily driving linux on mobile. But I'll say this: It's the next frontier, and when it starts to be even a little decent, I'm all-in.
