Christ on a bike, New Zealand local body politics is a parochial shitshow. Invercargill's full of misogynists, Gore's basically had an all-out cage fight, ORC and DCC are packed full of pointless infighting and every council in the country seems to be full of racists. https://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/conduct-complaint-against-carmen-houlahan

@paw> New Zealand local body politics is a parochial shitshowThis is because the most of the left basically ignored the last local body elections AFAICT. While the rabbithole right put up a smorgasbord of candidates, making the usual conservative shitbags look moderate by comparison.

I've told friends in the Greens, and I'll tell any left-leaning party that will listen...... run your people in the local body elections. There are so many benefits!Your campaign teams gain experience, and the candidates lift their local profile. Plus, with the dearth of decent candidates for local office, there's a good chance some of your people will actually win. Which means your values and policies get represented in local decision-making.@paw

@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz @paw@mstdn.io I like how "spreading your values" is the last argument you put forth to join politics. After "you could get really popular and famous".
