22 years later, this day remains painful and raw.

I was fortunate not to have lost any family or loved ones that day, though several old friends and former colleagues perished in the collapse. And in the years that followed, two close friends succumbed to lingering respiratory illnesses from the ground zero air. What I remember most vividly were the photocopied missing posters, plastered everywhere. Almost no one was found. They stayed up for days and then weeks and then months, morphing from desperate pleas for information into memorials.

Enough time has passed that having first-hand memory of 9/11 is now a marker for membership in an older generation, much the way WWII was for my parents. I think we have a responsibility to pass down our memories of that awful day, but we also have to be careful not to at the same time pass down the burdens of our anger and grief.

@mattblaze Imagine how Iraqis and Afghans feel. The global scale of the damage the 9/11 attacks caused is so huge.

@ian Yes, many lessons to be learned from this, some of which you'd think we'd have learned already.

@mattblaze It's depressing to look back at the past 22 years and feel like no matter how wrong they were about many things, the terrorists might not have been wrong about who we really are.

@mattblaze I’m in my fifties and am too busy grieving the loss of society being sensible about protecting itself from a brain-damaging airborne virus called SARS-CoV-2. You know, the one that has disabled tens of millions of our fellow citizens now, and is still killing a 9/11 worth of people every month.Just curious, do you wear an #N95 at public events? If so, thanks for not being part of this particular tragedy or the massive hypocrisy of the thinking class.

@edsuom I would normally happily engage with a good faith question about whether I mask in public spaces (I do).But your attempt to use that to hijack a person’s recollection of an unrelated tragedy leaves me uninterested in ever hearing from you again.

@mattblazeDon't know you. First saw you minutes ago.Masking against covid is unbelievably stupid, but you handled this exchange with absolute class. I applaud that.

@mattblaze I also rue the day your fellow Mossad agents killed good people.
