Day #2 after doing self-checkout wearing my #elastomeric #N95 and dry-eye Rx glasses while the only cashier at the grocery store was having a coughing fit 20 feet away. The only symptom is the slight sore throat that I’d started noticing that afternoon—when it was far too early for it to be from #Covid, and I hadn’t been off the property for a week before then.Now peak time for symptoms to be emerging. I’m anxious, yes, but reminding myself that I had excellent protection.#CovidIsNotOver

I am really feeling glad to have worn excellent #Covid #PPE this morning as I ventured off the property for the first time in over a week to go to the grocery store. I’ve been thinking a lot about the aerosols that unmasked cashier was spewing all over the area where we had to be to buy our shit. I’m trying to encourage the gratitude I feel about receiving the gift of this #N95 from my wife, and the Rx glasses with silicone cups for keeping air separate near the eyes.It’s better than rage.

I’m about as much of a #Covid #doomer as you’ll find here, but try to keep myself balanced when something doesn’t follow my pessimistic expectations. And so far, that’s what the #SARS2 mini-surge here in #Eastern #Washington is doing.As a couple of old guys I used to know liked to say, “Better’n a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.”Surge or no surge, my #N95 apparently kept me from getting whatever that cashier had that was making her cough loudly and often 20 feet away Monday.

@mattblaze You surely know this, but it probably won’t hurt to hear it: After four days, your probability of having been infected is way down from the prior. Tomorrow when you wake up feeling fine you can relax and thank yourself for having worn that Flo-mask.Four days is usually when I quit doing the #Covid countdown after being out among the unmasked mob.

@hn50 I use 32-bit #Ubuntu on an ancient HP that has the best keyboard and screen for #programming of any #laptop I’ve ever had. It’s a glorified X terminal now, but I spend hours a day using it to write #Python and hope it never dies.I hate the chicklet keyboards and squashed glossy screens of the modern laptops.

@mattblaze I’m in my fifties and am too busy grieving the loss of society being sensible about protecting itself from a brain-damaging airborne virus called SARS-CoV-2. You know, the one that has disabled tens of millions of our fellow citizens now, and is still killing a 9/11 worth of people every month.Just curious, do you wear an #N95 at public events? Having people you care about doing #Covid #pandemic #FAFO is painful in two ways.The FA hurts because they are fucking around going to concerts and restaurants and you're not part of their life in that way anymore.The FO hurts because you really don't want to hear that they have heart issues, brain fog, lots of other infections, etc. There's no joy in being right when it means a person whose well-being is important to you gets harmed.

I took a quick look at Twitter and saw a new paper posted on a significant drop in cognitive function being experienced on a mass scale since the start of the #Covid #pandemic. This would be useful to post under the #NoToBrainInfections hastag, I guess.Back in 2022 when people still seemed to sort of care, I would have spent an hour studying the paper and doing a thread on the statistics, methodology, etc. Those days are over, along with my social life and hope for the future.

Two days ago, I went to an especially dangerous place, with an #Elastomeric #N95 and special prescription glasses designed to keep surrounding air out of my eyes. I snorted not one but two different kinds of nasal sprays immediately after, and gargled with CPC mouthwash.There I wound up closer to an unmasked person who had obviously been sick than I’d been since 2020. Sniffles and throat clearing, and standing right next to me.It was the nurse at my doctor’s office.#Covid #dystopia.

After she weighed me and measured my height and we headed toward the exam room, I said, “Would you mind putting on some sort of a mask?”I still can’t decide if she was being sarcastic or not when she said she’d be happy to. …frankly, the medical profession is a disgrace and I knew ahead of time that this would use up more of my risk budget than I wanted. I took every possible precaution and if I wind up with symptoms appearing 2+ days after that I’ll be shocked.But I’m pissed. I have no respect for these people anymore, except perhaps for the doctor herself who wore a surgical mask without my having to ask. (The nurse probably warned her about me.)Fortunately, I won’t have to set foot in there for another year.

Someone who works for me has recently taken on a sales position that requires a lot of interaction with the public and is absolutely essential. Unfortunately, the attitude of people nowadays is such that she would just not be able to pull off the requirements of the job if she wore a mask at work. This person is Kamala Harris, candidate for President of the United States. If she doesn’t win, we’re fucked.
